How can I find out museums that own earthworks? Is there some kind of directory? Obviously MOCA owns Double Negative. Cleveland Museum of Art owns a work by Richard Long which is not even on view. How does one go about find out the names of museums in possession of earth art? I am more interested in the museums which own works in the land rather than indoor pieces. There must be more than Heizer's work. Please help me. I am trying to do a research project. Thank you for your time. Is there anyone who has visited Double Negative recently? What kind of condition is it in? How can I find out museums that own earthworks?

Hi Carol, Well, I think the DIA foundation owns Walter de Maria's "Earth Room" in NYC, not sure if you'd consider it an "earthwork", it's a gallery space full of dirt! They also own his "Lightening Field" in Quemado, New Mexico. It's in a pretty remote location about an 1 1/2 to 2 hour drive north of where I live. I haven't been there and you can't just drive up to see it. You park your car in town and they take up to 6 people to the site to spend the nite, then you pray for rain as it's on the expensive side, over $100. a night. You can't bring a camera, photography is forbidden as the lightening is HIS artwork.
Have a nice day,
Jeff
