After a few thousand rolls of film, a couple of darkrooms, printing, scanning and photoshoping hair out of my pictures... I have gone digital!
http://web.canon.jp/Imaging/eos20d/index.html sample images at the bottom.
The most money I have ever spent on a camera body, in fact 3 times as much. I've added it to a set of compatible lenses and wireless flash guns.
My hands were actually shaking at the shop as I paid (partly because I half expected my credit card to catch fire). I got one of the first perhaps 40 in Sydney as I've been on a waiting list at a pro camera shop.
... and I am in love. The images are stunning.

Here is one of my first shots, direct and untouched from the camera, as a large jpg - note that for my sculpture I will be shooting as a RAW file which is 4 times greater in size.

2MB so will take a minute to load.

Awesome! Where are they displayed?
Araich,
Congratulations on the awesome camera. Your images were already very good, but great equipment always expands the possibilities in the hands of someone like you, who knows how to take advantage of its strengths. It will be well worth whatever it cost you. In addition to the fabulous still images you will get, you may be able to make mini videos including sound with it. My husband can get two ro three minute clips with a digital camera from three generations ago, so most likely you can do even better ones.
We expect to be enjoying the results when we go to your website!

Hey all, sorry I know nothing about the whales, they're part of a local restaurant area near me. As for video - that would be nice! Unfortunately with a single reflex camera (SLR) there is no such thing as video. It does not even have a digital preview, since the image is not generated until the mirror flips up, and then just for that instant. It is the trade off for such high quality images, that it takes such brute processing force to make a single still image. However it can shoot 5 frames a second for a few seconds... but that is just practicle for fast moving subjects.
I'm confident I have spent well, even if my finances are in a shambles, since most of the time those initial shots of my artwork are the last I ever get to take, and besides, I have been spending $1500 AUD on film a year anyway.
I've just shown my husband (the camera freak of the family) which camera you purchased. He is impressed. He said it can produce files that will print very well at 13"x19" - the largest size we can print.
My question about the video shows my ignorance. His is a standard digital, which is why he can.
It seems obvious that you are needing it for more than just images on your website. What new direction will yo be taking with it?

I've just returned from a work trip south again, taking my baby with me...
New direction? (JAZ) Well, I always shoot for print. Even if I don't print straight away it is nice to have an archive of your work. Mostly this will just make an improvement in the images I get, and reduce the post click work.
chaz - if I think of it when next walking past, I'll take a wider shot of those whales for you.
