Hello everyone.

Back againg with a question. It seems a job interview for a part-time art teaching job has landing me some exposure at an art center/gallery. I think they are apart of the heniz endowment art programs?
At first i thought i would not get the job because i have no teaching background.(Well switch my major to fine art my JR year in college think about going back). Anyways after they looked at my slides it was "here's the act 34 and background check and can you have a lesson plan by tues". I guess it's a after school program for gifted kids, so i would get students that pay to be there.

but they invited me back that day for an opening and even called my house telling me to bring back my portfolio so they could show it around to the other broad members. They want 3 peices and see where that goes and maybe a show?? I never did a show in college!!???
three of the broad members talked to me about commission for metal projects; that they would like help with.

So now that i know people actuality like my art now what?

DM - If you like the situation, JUST DO IT! It may sound too good to be true, but go with your gut feeling. If the situation feels OK, jump in. From what you say, it sounds good to me. I’m sure you and the others working together can make something good happen. They want you to get more public exposure, and that will help both you and the school.

Let us know the outcome!

Congratulations, DM!

Don't be too hesitant with all this. I think, as with most situations, as long as you excercise some deliberation, you should be fine.

What pieces did you end up showing in your portfolio? If you have any of these digitized, I'd love to see them.

Any thoughts on what you might use for a lesson plan?

Keep us posted.

I'll get you a photo here. Umm the lesson is going to be design and carving. I'll have the kids draw a design from objects around them. I some times do a morphing of an object just to get some ideas. So i'll show them that; then have the students mold a small clay mock-up maybe the size of their fist. Go over revisions and scale size then have them carve their object.
I mostly go right from my head now sometimes i do a drawing but i started out this way in college.
here's a carving i did in my first real sculpture class.

It's all happening at once. I got an order for rod-iron mirror some shep hooks and now this. I got some side welding jobs for a guy. Fixing a car dolly and making some bbq pits. Having a real trade helps in the money area. They might have me teach a welding class on a 2 day work shop.
I'll see what happens it's close to pittsburgh and they have a large gallery.

Also i guess i did very well at my first art fair in indiana pa. Word got around and this professor of indiana college wants to get in contact with me. I guess he owns a pottery place and is trying to start an arts community.
well we'll see what happens.

thanks

Congratulations, DM! this is the sort of "rainbow" story that really happens every so often. These things may sound too good to be true, but sometimes they really work out. And was it Ben Franklin who said something like "Fortune smiles on those who are prepared”?

Yea but it was hard getting here. I just want to make a living at this, that's all. And if something comes out of it great, if i just make enought to pay the bills and have some extra money that's fine too. I would not call it a rainbow story yet at all.
