Hello - new to the site, sorry if this question has been asked before -

I'm wondering if anyone can explain a little about different means of scaling up (enlarging) sculptures. I know that computers are used alot these days together with CNC technology, but how is this done traditionally (I remember hearing about marble works in Itally which produce enlarged versions of models brought by artists). Are there ways to do this yourself, or is it basically a profession unto itself? Finally, what would be the best way to get in touch with companies specializing in production of larger pieces for other artists? I know alot of conteporary artists now work with manufacturers to produce their final pieces (particularly fiberglass/plastic based work), but would not know how to go about finding such manufacturers (this is probably a bit of an issue in the sculpture community!). Any advice appreciated, Thanks!

Just for a biginning to your search for enlarging, go to http://www.machinegraphics.com/speedy/enlargement.html.

The process is called "Pointing".

I have a book somewhere that explains it also.

I'll have to look for it.

I'll get back to you here.

Found the book sooner than expected.

It's called "Modelling and Sculpting Animals" by Edouard Lanteri, published by Dover, ISBN 0-486-25007-5.

Chapters 8 thru 12 go over pointing set-up and process.

If I come up with anything on your other questions I'll get back here.

Good luck.

Thanks oddist, that's a great lead. Now I know that, asside from doing it myself, what I guess I'm looking for is "sculpture services." I've already come up with quite a few others offering similar services thanks to your tip. Just to complicate things though, I'm living in central Europe at the moment, haven't come up with any similar services here. If any one knows of any sculpture service companies in the Austria/Switzerland/Germany are I'd love to hear about it.

Once you find the suppliers you need, how will you fund the work?

If Belgium is an acceptable distance for you, I know several artist-craftmen hereover who are used to enlarge pieces.
Btw, an alternative to the pointing process is digitisation but probably much more expansive. for info http://www.creaform.fr/indexUK.html

I work on 3d scanning of objects. I do not know how much it is to reproduce the piece and enlarge it but the scanning is fairly inexpensive. I do work with some companies that enlarge and reproduce pieces. If you are interested in the information let me know.
