If they had air set sand molds,"sweet oil",back then they could have used core paste for the core without burning out the wax.You should be able to tell by the surface if it is not covered up.Look up foundry techniques of the late 1800's and I bet you will get your answer.Regardless of how they were cast,they look interesting.
