View Full Version : Looking for References for Facial Expression

I am currently working on the portrait for a piece that is meant to show "Agony"
I know it doesn't sound very good and I am sure it will never sell but I have to do it and I am stuck on this portrait.
Can anyone suggest some references to known sculpture that show this emotion? How about pictures and drawings or paintings?
Thanks for your help.

Have an assistant handy, drop a large piece of sculpture on his foot and then make sure to capture his expression with a camera! :)
Blake, how about this one?

He shows up in the gallery photos here on the main page, if that doesn't show agony I don't know...
If that doesnt work it at least sounds like a good way to kill a few minuts...

Blake,Check out Barbra Riengrover's bronzes she did several years ago.She is a noted marble carver, but she also did a series or religous castings and I believe agony might have been one. They where fairly good in size, some more intense then others.IA

Maybe the entire face doesn't show.

Blake,
Here is a page from Phillipe Faraut's site that shows about a dozen expression masks if you haven't already seen these.

After looking at these more closely, however, I don't see an example of agony posted. Oh well, may be of some help to you or others anyway.

Perhaps by now you do not need photos. I just did one also called "Agony" that does not show the face, as it is intended to show the body posture.
But in general, for looking up photos on specific topic, I usually make use of the Google Image Search at www.google.com. After clicking into "images", I key in, say, the word Agony and I get many images related to agony.
