An International Sculpture Symposium has just commenced (Oct 31, 2005) in Vietnam. A friend of mine based both in Singapore and Canada is one of the invited artists from around the world taking part. I understand these artists have 40 days to carve very big sculptures out of marble or granite.

I now have more information about this international stone carving event in Vietnam, see below. It has the official name, The second international sculpture garden, ‘An Giang Stamp’.
Taking part are 35 international sculptors from 27 nations and 27 Vietnamese sculptors. After the event the sculpture garden will have 62 large sculptural carvings of marble or granite.
Privately my friend, one of the invited international sculptors, said the organisers are not able to pay very much, but for some reason he decided to take part, coming all the way from his home in BC, Canada.

It sounds like a fun event. Sadly, there seem to be few symposiums of this kind which is able to pay the artist properly for their work (if they pay at all!). Good luck to your friend.

thanks for this, Merlion. I also have a friend who is participating - John Weidman, from New Hampshire. John is the organizer of an intrntional sculpture symposium at the Andres Institute in Brookline, NH. They offer a small stipend, put the artists up with local families and provide materials, a well equipped workshop and materials. The artists leave the work there. I believe that the draw of such symposia is not what you earn in dollars, but the opportunity to work in a forgien country with expenses paid, work with artists from other countries and often in media not normally possible for you. Also, since the work is left with the host country, you then have a resume item that's more global, giving youexposure to new markets. As long as the symposium is well organized, it seems to me that it can be a very good opportunity.
