Hi!
I am still trying to wade through all the different threads on this forum but am already optimistic about its potential.
I primarily create large-scale, outdoor works in steel, wood & stone out here in mid-Minnesota. Springtime is always exciting for me because I can move out of the shop and back into the landscape! You can check out my work at: www.sculptorsam.com
All comments/questions/criticisms are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Sam

Welcome Sam,
I enjoyed looking at your website and work. The sculpture park you created is interesting. How large is it? I see driving instructions, do you get many visiters?

I'd say it's just over half an acre or so in size. There is plenty more field surrounding it if I ever need more room! Also, I'm currently cleaning up a small grove of trees adjacent to it for placing smaller works that may get dwarfed in an open field setting.
The park is located at my parent's land which includes both their house and my dad's business, where I have carved out a corner to work. The park gets plenty of visitors from my dad's business along with the odd person who happened into my website.
I don't really view it as a commercial venture, just a place to experiment with works, display them between shows, and above all for my own personal amusement. It's not exactly located in a place known for its support of the arts, hence the directions from the Twin Cities. But I do get a chance to discuss art with the local farmers. Always an adventure and educational for both of us.
I really enjoy that picture. Ten minutes later, the fog was burned off completely and the sky was a perfect blue. Good thing I got my camera out in time.

Hi Sam...
Great stuff. I have a friend that works out of the Bay area that has similar energy to his metalwork. I'll send a link if he has a website. I've been moving around quite a bit, so I've had to scale down. If two people can't move it... It's to damn big for someone renting. I'm originally from the great white north too... Nodak...Minot. Can't deal with the 20 below. Great people though.
I can relate to the discussions with the neighbors... "but, what's it do"? Do you use any finishes or are most of your pieces natural rust? Hope spring comes and sticks around... Peace. Preston

Thanks Preston. I use Cor-ten (weathering) steel so I don't use finishes of any kind. I do have them sandblasted to get the scale off and accelerate the rust though. ( Spraying them down repeatedly with salt water helps too. Brings new meaning to the term sculpture "garden!")
I lived down in Texas for a couple years and got used to the beauty of their winters. When I came back up here, I nearly froze.
I look forward to that link. In these days of high-technology, I like to keep up with what is being done in good ol' steel.

Phew!
Am I the only one here in awe of the prodigious amount of work that Sam produces???? My word! .... and it's heavy, too!
Congratulations on your obvious commitment to your art and passion.

I better hold my complaints about the descending winter chill here then. Today it was a miserable 18C /64F.
I met a NY based sculptor the other day, Andrew Logan, his stories of digging out the workshop (of snow) of a friend before work were hard to comprehend.
Still, it rained whole burnt gum leaves, and the sky was orange again this year.

Thanks, PA. It sure doesn't feel like I get a lot of work done sometimes. It generally takes at least a month to complete a reasonably sized work, up to three or more for a large one. So, at the most, I could complete around 10 in a year. Doesn't seem like that many to me. Maybe that's one reason I have been working smaller lately.
And 64 degrees in the winter? I may just have to move to the land down under!
