Hi,

I would be grateful if anyone could help me identify the sculpture in the link below. I would also like to know where this sculpture is located.

I don't recognize the artist, and obviously not the location, but the subject reminds me of the early Akkadian or Sumerian flood / creation myth, in which the hero swims to the bottom of the abyssal ocean to retrieve a bit of plant material that will confer eternal life (and possibly infinite wisdom also); I forget the details.

This sculpture is similar in theme to a wonderful bronze, sculpted in the 1950's I think, by Frank Eliscu. It is called Shark Diver and a copy is in the Brookgreen sculpture garden in South Carolina. The style of your example is different but it could be from an earlier period or the result of working in marble instead of bronze. Hope that helps.

I'm guessing that it's Scandinavian -- they like that primeval/mythic stuff -- and I'm guessing that it's done by someone born before 1940
