You do some very nice work. I like your emphasis on being a "muddler" as well. We have a local potter (Breshnahan) who digs all his own clay, cleaning and processing it himself for similar reasons as you I believe. It demonstrates a total involvement with the work which is admirable.

As for your definition of Outsider artist, it is entirely possible that I am one as well. Must someone consider themselves to be an "outsider" in order to actually be one? I like to think of myself just as a sculptor. Whether you are a true sculptor or not does not depend on how many degrees you have, but on the quality of your work. You, Benny, are definitely a sculptor. And a sculptor is a noble thing to be.

Well, I cannot see any insenstive posts, or even see an agenda towards the homourless and the elite.

Benny I think you've got the wrong end of the stick.

And as for long CV's and qualifications - I'm self taught, never went or wanted to go to University, and had made and sold over 100 sculptures before my first solo show.

I would have thought your work would have fallen into the realm of the more traditional, and mud included I cannot see it as radical or outside of "the 'real world' of sculpture".

Your not getting paranoid up there in the Byron hills are you? :)

Sorry everyone. I guess my snub detector had gone into overdrive while I grappled with using the technology. (By late Friday I was cursing my computer and starting to assume this networking thing might just be too good to be true...)
Good to see there are other self taught sculptors out there!
My work isn't quite as naive as it may first appear. The head chairs I am currently working on may have an ancient spiritual calm about them, but there is no specific cultural appropriation going on - they're locals. I have simply cut out the brain - leaving the frontal sensation lobes so that one may comfortably sit down and chill out a bit! Just what I need right now...

How much commission would it take before you found a sculptor willing to turn all those toppled statues of Saddam into George Bushes and stand them back up again?

Do you ever exhibit in Sydney Benny?

No Araich - I havn't. I haven't exhibited anywhere much - which might help to explain my recent paranoia about where the 'real world' of sculpture might place me. I now have a studio garden gallery in Byron (thanks to a few patient patrons). My most recent sales have either been through word of mouth, or people literally bumping into my sculptures while sight seeing around Byron.
I hope to find out next week whether I have been shortlisted for the Tweed Regional Gallery's Casuarina Beach Sculpture prize. That's a major event for me... If I get selected there I might feel brave enough to attempt Sculpture By The Sea next year.

There is The Woollahra Sculpture Prize in Nov, and the Waverley Art Prize in May (the entry form just arrived, if you want I can forward).
Naturally the main problem is the transport. But it's a good way to start your CV and meet galleries.
