John Sherrill Houser (http://www.12travelers.org/TheSculptors/JohnSherrillHouser/tabid/126/Default.aspx), sculptor of the XII Travelers Memorial, has enlarged The Equestrian (http://www.12travelers.org/), which will be the world’s largest bronze equestrian sculpture. It depicts Don Juan de Oñate, founder of the Hispanic Southwest, mounted on a rearing stallion at the Pass of the North in 1589. It will be installed at the entrance of the El Paso International Airport in the summer of 2006.

On February 8, 2006 the castings (from nearly 500 molds) were transported from Shidoni Foundry (Tesuque, NM) to Eagle Bronze Foundery in Lander, Wyoming for the final production process (welding, chasing and construction of the internal armature). Eagle Bronze specializes in large monuments and their installation. On April 4-5, Eagle Bronze hosted a public presentation of the fully assembled monument. This was the "rebirth" of the huge work which had been enlarged in the sculptor's Mexico City studio nearly two years earlier. The statue will be transported in six large sections by flatbed trucks to El Paso. Estimated date of arrival - April 30th - the 408th annivesary of Oñate's arrival at the Pass of the North (El Paso, Texas)!
