I'm a postgraduate landscape design student in London. For my MA dissertation I am researching the concept that outside sculpture enriches our understanding of landscape .

When I say 'outside sculpture' I am thinking of sculpture such as Land Art, site specific sculptures and/or sculpture parks. Sculpture that is less figuratively based but more with it's concepts rooted in landscape or natural materials.

I would be really interested to hear anyone's thoughts on this and would really appreciate any ideas into researching such a subject.

Thank you for your help!

Grania. . .

Wow, seems like a big topic. I'm not sure what you mean by "our understanding of landscape." I think of landscape as what you see when you're driving around. I like to look at it, but I don't know that I "understand" it.

I guess a goal of some land art may be to get viewers to question how they see the landscape more. What are the different formations, what are elements impacting the landscape.

In terms of sculpture in the landscape, Peter Murray at Yorkshire Sculpture Park and ISC Board Member, gave a great keynote address at the Sculpture Parks and Gardens Conference that was very insightful. You might contact him.

There's also a cool website with shots of Smithson's Spiral Jetty that I posted on this forum awhile back. Not sure where now.

Look forward to hearing back.

Where do the fountains, terraced canals, lagoons, and so on of Fontainebleau fit here? And the terraces of English country homes bordered with offset depressions to keep livestock at bay, not to mention great trees planted as sculptural elements? And on and on ....?
