I am going to hang up a light sculpture (about 50 lb weight) from a tall ceiling in a university library for display. I have made very sure it is safe, and the location is normally clear of students and staff underneath. But, to play save, I am thinking of taking out 3rd party coverage against personal injuries.
This is of course not a common type of insurance. Just now when I asked my insurance agent to find out, he was very puzzled.
Has anyone got any experience, or heard about such coverage?

This might be called a product liability policy, or an event policy if this is up for an exhibit/event.
I once asked about this for my sculptures, one falls off the wall you know, anyway the quote sent to me was about $5,000...
...a YEAR, for the premiums. Hmm, I told the agent I'd be lucky to gross that amount in total sales a year and to forget it.

I'm surprised this wouldn't be covered under your standard liability insurance that the university would be carring. To the best of my understanding the only precationary measure needed would be regular safety checks from the coustodial mantainance manager on staff or if they are not qualified for some reason a licensed contractor.
Wal-Mart has hanging TV's all over their store. I'm betting they don't have extra insurance for them.

Many venues have pre-existing insurance and a rider can be added at little to no expense to cover short term exhibitions and installations.
For sculpture commissions Commercial Liability Insurance is usually required, with a minimum $1,000,000 coverage that often must remain in force for one year after completion/installation of the work. In 2004 I purchased $2,000,000 commercial liability insurance coverage for one year at a cost of $1,800.
