Hello all,

Does anyone recognize this sculpture or the sculptor who created it?

I found this image in a book on Frank Lloyd Wright by Iain Thompson. But, alas, the image had no description and I'm not even sure at what site it's installed.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Chuck

Chuck - It looks a bit like Paul Manship. but not quite. He was from the upper Midwest, maybe Michigan or Illinois originally, and won the Prix de Rome in early 1900's, maybe 1910 - 1920.

I don't know who awarded it, but he spent a year at the American Academy in Rome and was strongly influenced by Archaic Greek work. At the end of his year, he brought back about 20 pieces for a New York show, and I believe he sold every one. Obviously, that launched him on a strong career, through about the 1940's, about the end of popularity for early 20th century figuration.

Generally, his work was stylized, a bit like this figure. The face, at least, of this figure shows Archaic Greek characteristics. Another possibility is Jacob Epstein, who was more stylized in his figuration, but I’m not familiar with anything like this.

Is the image not credited somewhere, perhaps at the rear of the book?

Very sloppy if that is the case. Perhaps try contacting the publisher.

Also, have you considered that it could be by Frank Lloyd Wright... he did design sculpture I think.

Well, I have a little more information. The statue is installed at SC Johnson Wax in Racine, WI, USA.

My attempts at searching the web for information on the artwork at this site has been unsuccessful. I tried contacting SC Johnson Wax via telephone but, the person I spoke with was clueless and not very helpful. I tried calling the local art museum but, got their answering machine.

This is the equivalent of hearing a song on the radio and wondering who sang it but, the DJ just puts on another song.

This is maddening!!!

Still searching,
Chuck
