hello, i am michele jaquis. i have my mfa in sculpture, but i don't really make objects or consider myself a "sculptor", so sometimes i feel out of place in this sculpture community. i've done some performance art in the past and i make a lot of video installations in which the viewer can participate in a sculptural way. sometimes i get sick of sitting at my computer, editing video and i miss the sound of the mig and arc welders and the smell of a woodshop and having to move big heavy things. so even though i have been getting interested in photography and digital imagery the need to build things is always there. lately i have also been working more as a facilitator in my projects, asking people to participate in the creation of the work or in the completion of it.
i am interested in catharsis, healing, purging, exorcising and transforming psychological states. i am interested in the way humans are affected by the relationships we have and the complex separations and connections that occur in those relationships. recently, i have been exploring father daughter relationships, absentee fathers and families headed by single mothers. these are personal experiences, but i hope by including others in the process the experiences prove to be more universal, and the process of making proves to be beneficial to all that participate.

Hi Michele, I toured your site, and Dad was familiar. Not sure where I'd seen it.
I admire the complex and emotional issues you take on, makes my own work seem void.
I also understand your comment on physically making things. I think this is my main escape, and lately I have retreated to it completely.
Where I may differ is that communication is only ever an accident in my work. I make it for myself.
The making being the primary goal.

I like your work. My daughter is taking mass media communications and photography at ORU and your work reminds me of hers.

I love the concept of your work and can see you doing a lot with it. Of course I am also quite fond of the interaction, or lack of with the subject matter within my own art.

About the title of sculptor... Titles are a little overwhelming, besides there is so much responsibility attached to them.

I am gald you are frequenting the board, and because I am also new here I am looking forward to wandering around with you and seeing what comes up.

Keep creating,
Bridgette
