View Full Version : hello (gday)
hullo to all in sculpturwunderland; im a sculptor from down under
and like the psudo nym suggests im fiddling around while ROME
burns. we have a joyful objectivity down here in New Zealand, westernised (by british colonial expansion) and almost civilized.
There is very strong sculpture in NZ.
Derida once said " there is nothing more conservative than the apocalyptic".
Were the terrorist attacks on the pentagon whitehouse and world trade centre apocalyptic?
Is the domestic culture of America becoming more conservative? ( im not sure how radical/liberal it was before )
If so is this influencing the content of sculpture ( or perhaps what is being publicly commissioned )

Welcome, Nero! I don’t believe there’s been any noticeable change in commissions, but 9/11 certainly has made its mark in sculpture, much as the growing world-wide depression did in 1920's and 1930's Europe. These things do leave their marks on artists.

Nero, Kiora.
I was born and grew up in Rotorua... and wish I knew more about NZ'd sculpture. Even though I'm only 3000km away it really is another world.
I'm planning a trip back soon, in which I hope to tour a few studios and galleries in Auckland. A much needed education.
Welcome.

Nero,
Derida once said " there is nothing more conservative than the apocalyptic".
Who is Derida?
I was wondering what medium and style of sculpture is most common in NZ. I am a wood sculptor and I have the impression that theres allot of that down there.
As far as your question, my impression of the US political layout is that middle America tends to be more conservative. There is a more liberal perspective in the cities. If you break it into regions west coast (california) seems to be the most liberal with only the major cities on the east coast to rival. I am from the midwest (ohio) which leans conservative.
You ask:If so is this influencing the content of sculpture ( or perhaps what is being publicly commissioned )
I am curious, would you say that the majority of major art produced in NZ in publicly or privately commissioned? Most of the work I have done has been commissioned privately. And I would say that people tend to think more patriotically after 911, and this effects what they order.
Best wishes,
Adam

Welcome Nero,
Would you advice us a site to visit so to figure what NZ sculpture is?
" there is nothing more conservative than the apocalyptic"
Insecure feelings may create introvert behaviour. It is psychologically logic, artistically regrettable. In Europe 9/11 (and Bush politic!!) have had a perverse effect for US artists, as their too patriotic feelings have been rejected by the market.
