For UK sculptors, (or just anyone interested). I visited the City Lit adult education college in London yesterday. Brand new building, with outstanding visual arts facilities, a range of courses and inexpensive tuition. Near Covent Garden, so well placed for all things cultural in London.
Have a look, and if you take anything up, I'll be doing a course in July and a year-long course from September, so maybe we'll meet up.....

This City Lit has a very large number of part-time courses. Impressive. Which sculpture course(s) are you teaching, Cantab?

Not teaching, Merlion. Taking courses. I may try the metal sculpting week in July. Have wanted to combine metal and stone for some time. And may try a City & Guilds course for a year. I have always committed to abstract work, with the result that I have limited skills when completing elaborate or intricate work. Need to work on this.

You are soooooo lucky to have this type of educational environment available to you. Just scanning over the various courses offered at this City University I could count about 5 courses I would love to take, one or even two in Photoshop as well as film editing Finial Cut Pro courses and then the sculpture, modelling the figure. I even thought that the clay sculpture course where they teach you the technique of making sculpture to fire would be fascinating. I would love to take such courses and the price is reasonable. You are lucky, take advantage.
There are a number of courses are about buying art, I would love to take a few to study why people buy art and what they buy, how and why they create a collection and another to view art galleries and museums with an instructor to get another educational point of view. Art and writing could be interesting… I might be able to make VU811 sculpture modelling from life, I do this all the time but I would learn something new without doubt, it is on the 23 & 24 of July, which ones are you going to take.

Blak - nice to hear from you. Of the summer courses, I think the metal workshop would be of most value to me. The modelling from life also looks good - but I have tended to avoid getting started on figurative work as it could be a long learning curve. I'm also interested in developing a better integrated all-round feel for sculpting. So a week just sculpting may also be valuable - my sculptures are often rather square, like buildings, with 4 sides.....
For the Autumn (the year-long courses) taking a City & Guilds course may help to discipline my work. I like to draw first and then 'transfer' work to stone, and I seldom do this successfully. Partly, or mainly, transferring from a 2-D idea to a 3-D space gets me in a tangle.
If you intend to come over, do let me know. Note - must be in Carrara for a couple of sessions late summer/early Autumn.
Hi there, I'm new to this forum. Just thought I'd say hi..as I was reading that your going to carrara for some carving !! Nice :) I just got back from a 2week course at Arco Arte (mentioned by chrisb, in one of the posts on finding courses in europe). I enjoyed the course very much; sculpting in marble. Im looking for other course(s) in tuscany, as i'm probably going back in sept. I am also looking for short courses in london and I dont have a studio to work in anymore !
best regards,

Hi Majd
Just noticed this post - bit late.
I've worked at Arco Arte, and have rented space there. Good for getting cheap marble from, when you get a studio again. Bit expensive re accommodation, though - Global Studio Workshop offers a better training/accommodation deal (at Massa). Also try Apparatus-Sculptoris.it - no accommodation, and more expensive, but great lively atmosphere. Lots of courses available at Pietrasanta too, which I presume you have visited. Great atmosphere.
If you want training, though, there are many BETTER courses in England, with a better training etiquette. (Some Italian artists have a tendency to take over the work, and do it for you. I've seen tears too often over this). Italy is better from renting space and an angle grinder. Cheap stone, good wine, good people and good weather.
