Picasso said that the hidden harmony is better than the obvious. When i sculpt,i always try to go after that thought.

To find the the beauty in all things. From moments of personal tragedy to moments of personal triumph, from the celebration of life to the quite beauty that can be found in death, I strive to see all these things as beautiful and give them a voice through my sculpture.

My philosophy: To toss myself daily into the scrap heap as if it were a pile of dollar bills or rose petals and heave-up the stuff of my whims, me and it-all caught up in a red-hot blender of creativity. Eventually I emerge bloodied and scarred, panting through a smile and look back upon the days product, satiated by the fulfillment yet starving for tomorrow.
Art is art. Everything else is everything else. (Ad Reinhardt)

He may well have borrowed that notion from Keats in Ode to a Grecian Urn... "Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard are sweeter".. Implying that the imagination is far more powerful than the "real".
Picasso would have read this, no doubt and the theme is very much the same.

Mine is still evolving...as I age...as I learn. At the moment it is centered around those commonalities of creative thought that are found in every age and every art. Rediscovering/discerning them in the works of the past/present and finding my own expression of them is the dominant theme. Honoring a tradition, but not that of a style or technique...rather a shared intent and purpose.
This is such a serious sounding question. At least it's philosophy with an "f". I like that better. I hope it was spelled that way intentionally. Being serious I think leads to constipation. Thats no fun. But its ok for philosophers, they're such tight asses anyway.

I agree you cannot explain the essence of your art with words, jOe. But as artists we are used to non-verbal communication, so dealing with words- i see it as a refreshing change of language :)

on a deeper note---what bob said
but in my actions---
if I want to see it or hear it or smell it or...
I shape it in 3D
whether it's
building ...(houses, greenhouses, furniture, my studio, ...)
sculpting
planting trees and flowers
digging and sculpting a stream and waterfalls
digging and planting a pond
If i want it filling my senses
I add in some skill, effort, training, and "make it so"
does that make me a dilettante?

you grab a image with your hands then just set back and go for a ride.
the ride might take you over a cliff but you get back up and grab the
next one.

PS and on a deepest note, Sculptor, we should all be such dilettantes. After all God was just a gardener.

Hi, My art philosophy is "just do it!". Everything else will take care of itself.
I just try to make sure and avoid "decoration" and to keep "feeling" in my work.
Have a great day,
Jeff
