Well,
I'm closing in on my Associates degree - This is a huge step for me - I've attempted to finish college twice before - And I'm gathering information about presenting portfolios to different Art Schools - about National Portfolio Day and the like - but I'm also beginning to research which schools may be best for me - I'm not interested in figurative art and I love working with metal - but do quite a lot of work in wood and mixed media - Currently I live in Oakland and I'm somewhat interested in CCA but I would like to get a list of schools to explore while I'm preparing my portfolio...

Thanks Much

oh - and I did finally get a movie up online - a lot of people didn't know that my sculptures are actually 3 dimensional - it's hard to tell from a static photo image - http://janesommerhauser.freehostia.com/ - click on sculptures and then on captured space video....

You might consider University of Wisconsin, Madison- my friend Aris Georgiades teaches sculpture there, and he does metal/mixed media stuff.

Metal sculpture is not very popular at regular liberal arts colleges these days- it is being dropped by many in favor of computers.
The University of Washington, for example, is a pale shadow of what it once was.

I would imagine The Art Institute of Chicago is still pretty good, Chicago has always been a sculpture town.

Many colleges are more oriented towards small scale metalsmithing, like Oregon College of Crafts, or the program at the Savannah College of Art.

Rick Smith does a great job at Carbondale- Southern Illinois University. Its the only graduate level degree program in blacksmithing in the country. Rick is a master craftsman, and does a nice job of balancing art and craft.

Cranbrook, of course- but thats graduate only.

You might consider just taking classes, rather than a degree trajectory- you could put together a pretty great metals education doing workshops at Haystack, Penland, Peters Valley, The Crucible, and Pratt up in Seattle.

CCA is still a good choice- Linda Fleming Rocks, in my opinion.

Thanks for the great advice -
I would love to go to CCA but money is an issue and it's bloody expensive...
