dear members,

I have made bronze sculptures for a few years, Now I want to
try to do some work in marble.

I have no factory yet that can carve it for me, but Im sure thats no problem to find where I live (China), Im only worryed about how slim I can make the model.

is there any page on the internet that have any suggestions on what I should think about, is there some stones that are stronger then others?

kind regards
Johannes

Well, marble varies in hardness, although hardness tends to be more important in relation to the KIND of work you are doing (I use hard marble when I want clean lines that won’t crumble when I work the stone, and won’t get damaged easily when moving.). The fineness of the crystalline stucture is perhaps more important in figurative work, in order that you can cut finely and not have chunks of stone separating (I’ve had lips separate from a face because the mineral content was too uneven or too high).

Slimness – that’s not really an issue of the stone. With diamond discs you can cut most marble as slimly as you wish. And if you are using a factory, then that’s what they will tend to use anyway. Hand tools involve trauma, and that’s when the slimness is an issue.

If you are referring to how slim you can make the maquette - model - that's a question of size surely. The larger the maquette the less likely the trauma of carving will result in fracture. Have to say, though, you can't go from not having used marble to completing a good maquette in one go....

Sorry to see you are into factories, though – don’t see the point of taking up stone carving and then getting someone else do the work……

thank you catab,

I would love to carve the sculptures by my self, but I dont have the tools and the skill, and I'm just interested in see my wax model in a different material then bronze.

I would love to see some pictures on marble sculptures, if anyone have a website or know about one please post some adresses.

Hi Johannes

There are various online routes to the information and resources you need. My own website offers links under 'Resources', including a 'Learn to Sculpt' section and links to major online resource sets.

Will do Sam :)

Thanks for the link to your page. It's chalk full of very useful info. I can see referring to it often. If you don't mind, I'll share it with my peers.

Slainte,
