If you do a search you would see previous discussions on this.
Anyway, there is a thread and some suggestions on this topic early this year. Here it is. Stone sculpting table (http://www.sculpture.net/community/showthread.php?t=4544&highlight=carving+table)

don't know what scale you are working with, but in the past I have worked on a table that was just a piece of plywood on the top of a 55 gallon drum and just threw in a couple of screws so it wouldn't slide off. would work for anything up to about 200lbs max I would guess. you could even fill the drum with water or sand for extra stability.

Hi, If you can get your hands on a BUTCHERS BLOCK, that's the ideal. They're solid, heavy and sturdy.
Have a great day,

I once ripped up all the lanes out of a bowling alley in Bayonne. had the stuff stacked around my sudio for years in 8 10 foot sections. I made my last two kitchens out of it, numerous work tables and even a few dining tables and coffee table for selling. But I gave much of it away when I shut down my Jersey studio, my big plans for it never fully realized. The steel was more important.

Here is my webpage with a design that I have used since 1986, when I built a dozen of them for a stone carving class I was teaching at college (they are still in use in the studio there, too!):

At the bottom of the page are downloadable PDF files of the heavy-duty design as well as a light-duty version that I built for a local art center.
