Human image referance site. Excellent.

I was recently pointed to this site via a polymer clay forum. I am sure some of you already know about it, but it was news to me so I am sharing the info.

The second link is to a page with plates of 85 different women. Each plate has seven standing images as blank an expression as they can muster. One image is frontal clothed. Then nudes, front, back, left and right profile, and two closer images of front and back. Unfortunately there isn't an equivilant amount of male photos on the site. And most that are there are body builders, that do not represent the general population. I also wish the female gallery had a wider array of weight and age groups. Yet I found that by snagging a copy of all of them and then scanning through them in a fast slide show helped to peal back some of my preconceptions about the female form. Primarily that the average healthy female has a greater hip width than I had believed.

Stephen - Thanks for this post. It will show some of the difficulties faced by figurative sculptors, in terms of community reactions to nudity, but it really does seem a good resource for the contemporary sculptor. These are real, contemporary women, and not abstractions or idealizations from 150, 500 or several thousand years ago.

I agree with you that a greater range of form and age would help. These images show the typical focus on young and thin. But, in practical terms, those are the people most willing to share in this way.
