"Paladin", the fifth in a series of Longhorn Bulls by sculptor Bettye Hamblen Turner will be installed May 29th at The Benini Sculpture Ranch near Johnson City, in the Texas Hill Country. Paladin is welded stainless steel, carbon steel, and chrome. (Each of the first four longhorns were sold and installed in public and private collections.) Turner begins the sculpture by fabricating a pipe armature, and then works from the ground up, and inside out, layering carbon and stainless steels for their finished effect with recycled chrome parts cut and fitted from existing shapes. Turner shapes the steel pieces by hand into complex curves using both hot and cold bending techniques. Even the smallest pieces can require up to 40 bends to describe the contour of the longhorn. Her work is a metaphor for the strength and motion of these powerful animals.
