Sculpture by Sam Spiczka

Atwood Memorial Center Gallery, St. Cloud State University

October 22 - November 20, 2008

Opening reception
Tuesday, October 29, 12-2 p.m.

Minnesota artist Sam Spiczka draws inspiration from the varied aspects of nature, though his sculptures are not direct representations but rather creative abstractions of natural forms. Spiczka notes that both “beauty and brutality can be found in unexpected places,” and explores these contrasts in his work.

This solo exhibition will include free-standing and wall-mounted sculptures by Spiczka made from Cor-ten steel, a special alloy which weathers to a beautiful, rusted patina. The show will also feature burned wood reliefs by the artist, created by fabricating custom metal "brands," heating them with a torch, and systematically burning them into wood panels.

In less than a decade Spiczka has launched a career that has won him local, regional, and national attention. The artist's award-winning sculptures can be found in public and private collections across the United States.

“When art is truly new, it unsettles us and may seem ugly because we have little to connect it to. So it is with the work of Sam Spiczka. Drawing upon nature, his personal history, and the place where he lives, he has created a powerful, fresh visual language that is completely his own.” —Victor M. Cassidy, Critic & Writer

Will do. I should have stopped by the day before it opened for some installation shots, but wanted to get right back to the new sculpture I'm working on. So they might have to wait until Tuesday at the opening.

Okay, some images I took today. There's more display space behind the center wall, but I just couldn't get a nice composition of it. Hopefully the contrast is good, I'm noticing some discrepancies between different viewing program.

Quite impressive.

Beautiful work Sam, and it just looks amazing in there.

Yeah, great looking show Sam. How do you get those things to perch so nicely? as I notice some seem to have small footprints for their heights. Are they fastened or adhered? Would an affectionate viewer knock one over?

All of the larger pieces are bolted/attached to their bases, yes. One thing I learned from doing outdoor art fairs is to secure everything against the curious or distracted. If you want a real dynamic presention, a small footprint is a great way to go, and the nice thing about steel is that it allows for that. Though I still repeatedly get people thinking they're wood...

I can see the wood illusion. what is the patina? and how hard is it to put it on/keep from rubbing off etc.???

They're all Cor-ten, weathering steel so that is the material's natural, rusted patina. The variations in color are natural, and partly the result of the varying ages of the pieces and their exposure to the elements. The one large "white" piece is actually just the freshly sandblasted steel. I finished the piece too close to the show to properly rust it but decided to exhibited it anyway. I think the contrast is rather nice.

Stunning Sam. I like the perforations in the work right.
