I'll be coming back to the States again this year in August and I was wondering if you guys perhaps know of some sculpture parks, museums (dedicated to sculptures) or public artworks that would be worth checking out?

I'll be in New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, D.C. and Lancaster (PA). So, if you know anything interesting in those cities, please let me know.

Oh, I have to add that I won't have a car, so it would have to be IN those cities or be accessible by public transport.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

NYC is a no-brainer. The Metropolitan, Whitney, Guggenheim, and Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) all have excellent collections of contemporary sculpture, and in some cases of earlier periods as well. In Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Art Museum, has a good collection, though smaller. The Pa. Academy of Fine Art has an excellent collection of mostly figurative work. The Franklin Parkway (I think that’s the name) is lined for its length of a mile or so with excellent works of many periods. A Rodin Museum is on the Parkway near the Art Museum.

In D. C., the Hirshhorn on the Mall has a great outdoor sculpture garden as well as a rotating indoor collection. The National Gallery, both East Wing (newer) and West Wing (original) have good collections. For earlier, European and American pieces, the Corcoran Gallery is good. This is just a sample. I’m sure others will recommend more.
