Plum Pictures has been commissioned to produce a major six part prime time BBC 2 series in which James May will enthuse the nation with the joys of old-fashioned iconic toys, from Lego to train sets. He believes they encourage children and families to learn and play together in a way that IPods, computer games and more modern toys do not. Each hour long episode will look at the history of a particular toy and James will undertake a hugely ambitious challenge with it on a scale never before attempted.
One of the episodes will be about plasticine and James has been given permission to enter a 5 x 7 metre plasticine garden into this year’s Chelsea Flower Show. We are looking for a sculptor who can join James and a top gardener to help them create this artwork. James will be coming up with the design but will need considerable input to help him refine and modify this as he learns of the advantages and limitations of working with plasticine. We would ideally like the sculptor to initially work with him on a one to one basis showing him what can and cannot be done with plasticine and helping him think creatively. We would additionally need this person to coach and help supervise the children and families we will enlist to produce the plasticine plants. The sculptor would finally need to make sure the garden is put together in the most effective and creative way possible.
The ideal candidate would:
- be London based or be able to travel to London for individual filming days and for the build at Chelsea
- enjoy working as part of team, but would have strong opinions about what will and won’t work and be happy to voice these
- have experience of large creations / projects – particularly those that involve more than one artist
- enjoy working with children (likely to be teenagers) and members of the public
- have a good sense of humour
- be able to advise on the build time and logistics (but we will have additional off screen support)
- have good ideas for informal workshops with James and members of the public that are interesting, informative and fun
If anybody was interested in applying then please email me at rebecca@plumpictures.co.uk or call me on 020 7184 6758. The project will shoot between March and mid May with just the odd occasional day of filming before the main build in May and the show itself. In May this could be a full time job for a couple of weeks depending on the exact form the plasticine work takes.
