Some time ago I met Peter Randal-Page in Devon, UK, only to find that one of his pieces has now been installed in a public space in Cambridge.

Randal-Page is, I guess, one of the forefront British artists of the 'old school' of carvers. This piece is typical of one aspect of his output - taking unformed 'boulders' of stone, and working in a kind of relief, incising geometrical/mathematical patterns. Powerful recognition of the stone, and the action of the mind and hand.

I do like this piece Cantab (size, weight, girth, stone, heavy, rock, carved with hands, etc)...but I suspect that the shallow carving becomes very 2 D at any distance at all. texture falling away to pattern and eventually its just an easter egg. This guys got to dig DEEPER, or its all for nothing.

Yes, lovely in a ball of yarn sort of way, but,... must go deeper, muust, gooo deeeeeeper!

Lot of people teach stone carving always say that you can just erode and erode and erode the rock until there's nothing left. True this, but must go deeper anyway. :)

Yes, the egg is at the Eden Project in Cornwall, I believe.

A couple more pieces, one just to set your teeth on edge, and a melting bronze.

The red one reminds me of a mola (http://www.fellow-traveler.org/Molas.html). The sculpt is much more pleasing with that reference, i think.

Randal-Page did speak of his interest in a range of ancient cultures, including Maya - so your visual link may have some foundation. And you're right, this adds to the sculpt.

The fellow seems to be consistent, so take your depth, you,...depth merchant, you.
Just browsed at the mans website and wow, he´s been busy. Not really my cup of tea, though.
