I have just made contact with a company called Everbrite. They sell clear, protective coatings for metal work. I tried it on two of my recent welded steel sculptures with excellent results. It is easy to apply and gives a nice shine to the metal. A little goes a long way, which was nice to discover. I was starting to worry about the cost of the spray coatings that I was using.

Cool...I'm always up for a new clear coat. As I've said before...Penetrol has served me well.

Hi, I've always used automobile clear coat, sprayed on my pieces. It works well and lasts and can be touched up with a spray can of clear coat that you can get in any auto parts store. It's a gloss coating and what I like about this everbrite is that it also comes in a satin finish.
Thanks for the info.
Have a great day,
Jeff

Nice of you to share this. You might also go onto LinkedIn and join the contemporary sculpture group and share this information.

Many years ago my father used a clear coating for his welded bronze sculpture. He wanted the work to remain bright- however, now that I am the one who has to clean and repair work I find that the sculpture is all tarnished but under the clear coating- so.... even wire wheels can't take it off or penetrate...and the sculptures are very complex and uneven. Unaccessable to wire wheels. I would need some kind of acid bath...maybe. In any case it is a pain. So maybe for 10 years it was OK but after 30 it only makes it worse. In any case that is my experience.

Denise,
Have you ever considered having it 'dry ice pellet' blasted? This process was designed to remove the paint from airplanes without any damage to the metal. We have been using this method for a few years to clean steel dies without damaging the sharp edges. When the sculpture was originally clear coated it probably was not prepared properly. If you need help in locating a place to blast your piece, let me know.
