Thats awesome. How'd you build it? Where do you show it? (And move it?)

Thanks Lesabre, your car's pretty cool too!

This is from my blog entry about the Rocket Car......

""""Yeah, I know, totally absurd! There never was a time when this sculpture ever made sense. I had a huge 10,000 sq. ft. studio with a 5 ton overhead bridge crane and a seemingly endless supply of steel from a closed heavy equipment manufacturing factory that was next door. I actually set out to build a real life working rocket car. As a kid I was fascinated with the Apollo moon shot. I built model rockets and sent them flying into the sky. Then I built model rocket cars and sent them flying across parking lots. Guess I never grew up.

This thing is 35 feet long and has a 14.5 foot wing span. The front wheel has a Clarke forklift steering mechanism. All wheels are hubbed with 5 inch roller bearings. The wagon wheels give it a bizarre look. I had planned to sheet them off solid but never got to it. A leather Delorean seat gives comfort to the pilot in a cockpit whose dashboard is fully loaded with multiple gauges. An appropriate down draft up draft ratio was built in the wings to keep the craft squarely on the ground but not bury it, when under thrust. The end design was a land shuttle. The cargo bay doors were never cut in and fitted.

I had most of the Rocket Car complete and was starting to design and build the rocket motor engine when quite a surprise walked in the door. My landlord, whom I had never seen in a black power suit before, walked into the studio with 3 others in black power suits. One was introduced as a general in the army, another was introduced as a general in the air force, and the third was not introduced. They all walked straight in and up to the rocket car of which they all looked at and quizzed me about. I was then given a pass to the local government supply depot where an auction was being held, to procure rocket motors. I went to the auction and was in this tiny room where all the auction items were listed in a huge catalog. I asked someone which listings were rocket motors. It turned out they were JATO’s which are used to lift heavy planes off the ground. You turn them on but cannot turn them off. I thought to myself, how the heck do I test this? I turned them down.

I never got the motor finished. I had fixed up the building so much that the landlord moved me out for higher paying tenants. The wingspan prevented me from moving it into my next shop. I did tow it in a Fourth of July parade a couple times. That was fun. The piece now rests in storage.

So…ya wanna buy a Rocket Car? Make me an offer! """""

Its a great sculpture O, especially the big wagon wheel as spice. Why would you want to ruin it by turning it into a real rocket. Any group of geeks could figure that out.

But why didnt the secret government agents memory erasers work on you? Me, I was immune to it because I had been drinking small bottled doses of it in the ghetto for so many years, when they hit me with the big one aware and unfazed, I just fiegned the appropriate blankness, "wha...who...where...hey, where can I get a lighter like that fellas?". They were after the designs for my mobil-auto-guillotine.

It would look good and probably be highly appreciated outside a childrens museum. You wouldn't have to give up ownership and it would get you more attention than merely sitting in storage. Just a thought.. Alternatively it would make a great prop in a movie. Get to see yer name up on the big screen...

Since this is Shameless Self-Promotion I'm taking the easy route to car sculpture.
Take a pre-existing car and simply add a small sculpture to the front!

I suspect I'm not the first, but what the heck.
Nice cars by the way.
Definitely need to be 'out there' where folks can see 'em.
