hi. i'm trying to make a flat plank of clear resin, and i'm trying to make the resin shatter. my plan so far is to pour a really thin stabilising layer down first, then a 1" thick layer of resin with too much catalyst and allow it to shatter, then pour another thin layer over that.

does anyone have any experience in controlling the shattering of resin? i know it can catch fire if there's too much catalyst present... any suggestions? or recommendations on products to use / not use for this?

hi teddyboy

shattered resin----heavens, why

anyway-----when I have set resin too quiclky in depth over an inch, it didn't shatter, but it did show a lot of stress fissures.

(wild guess)...unequal stress shatters most materials------eg: heat only one spot and it wants to expand, do this whill cooling the rest so it wants to shrink----it might just shatter

for a pro with the answers, I call Peter at eager plastics (http://www.eagerplastics.com)

happy hunting

The resin won't 'shatter', but the hotter you kick it the more stress cracks you'll get. Also, if it's the shattered look you're after, lay down a cloth or cardboard barrier and use a ballpeen hamer on it. And if it starts to smell good- put your respirator back on.
