Hi all,

I've made it to New Orleans and look forward to the Sculpture Symposium starting tomorrow. I know Jaz is coming and Fritchie will hook up with us at some point.

Of course, many Sculptors are traveling in for the event. Al Paley has been here a couple of days already, Rob Fisher got here today, Laura Thorne is here from D.C. and several others are filtering in. I just ran into Pat Renick from Cincinnati and she is bursting with life and enthusiasm for sculpture as is normal for her - sometimes it is just nice to be with someone so energized by the arts, and feel some of that energy flowing. I'm ready for a transfusion - bring it on!

The symposium actually starts tomorrow, but tonight a few of us are going to Doonky Chase Restaurant for at taste of one of the true New Orleans originals. I was just reading about it on Frommers;

"Chef Leah Chase dishes up one of the city's best bowls of gumbo -- no small achievement -- along with more esoteric dishes such as shrimp Clemenceau, an unlikely but successful casserole of sautéed shellfish, mushrooms, peas, and potatoes. The fried chicken is exquisite, as are the sautéed veal, the grits, the grillades, and the court bouillon -- a first cousin of gumbo in which okra is replaced by tomatoes, onions, and garlic, along with generous chunks of catfish. Keep an eye out for touring jazz artists or prominent black politicians who may well occupy the adjoining tables."

Bring it on!!

Russ - Doonky Chase’s actually is Dooky Chase’s - named for the late husband of restauranteur Leah Chase. It’s one of NO’s best-known Creole restaurants and a favorite with out-of-towners, as well as locals. Give me a call when you can. As I said on the other post, I’ll probably be 40 miles north of NO most of tomorrow, but will be on flexible schedule, so do hope to get together. I’m sure the conference will be great.

Yes you are right about the name of course, Leah actually came out to the table and talked with us for a while. Turns out she is real excited we all are in town. Then she starts talking about a sculptor she knows that is coming - says he did that picture over there on the wall. Turns out to be by Richard Hunt.

And it turns out she is making all of the gumbo and catering several other things for the symposium event tomorrow night. I hadn't known about that connection until she told us. The food tonight was New Orleans fabulous, and I think it will be a real hit tomorrow with most sculptors.

I've taken some photos of the opening tonight to post, but I have to go just now so it will have to wait. So many events going on here in New Orleans this weekend.

By the way, I am also looking for Benbow Bullock, but haven't run into him him here yet, although I've heard he is here. Benbow please send me a PM if you see this.

And here are some quick links to the conference schedule and other events if you are interested.

How many people turn up to one of these?

If there was a market in eye teeth I would be there too :(

Pictures are highly desired!

There is another thread about the conference with some photos here: http://www.sculpture.net/community/showthread.php?threadid=1185

I took a number of photos of New Orleans sculpture and also a few of some of the events.

Antony Gormley gave the keynote address at the Contemporary Arts Center Theatre, which I found insightful and seemed to be rather well received by the audience. He has a flash website at http://www.antonygormley.com/ that is fairly elaborate if you are interested in seeing more of his work.

Over the next day or two I will go through my photos and will soon post more of the sculpture we saw in New Orleans to Sculpture Community.

I've just posted 28 images of New Orleans sculpture in the Photo Gallery http://www.sculpture.net/gallery/ under the category Public Art - New Orleans sculpture. Most were taken at the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden.

It is a nice sculpture garden and well worth visiting if you are in the area.
