Announcing the solo exhibition, “Bio-Logics”, of recent sculptures by Sam Spiczka at the ZONE Gallery in Kansas City, Missouri. Reception will be held on Friday, May 6, from 6-9 p.m. The show will include medium to large-scale fabricated steel and wood sculptures executed in Spiczka’s distinctive style.

Sam Spiczka is a nationally exhibited, award-winning sculptor from Minnesota. Most recently his work was installed at the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Lincoln, MA, and the Florida Outdoor Sculpture Competition in Lakeland, FL. For more information about Spiczka’s sculpture, visit his website at: http://www.sculptorsam.com/

“When I look at a natural creation, be it a bone, shell or tree, I am struck by the anomalies and variations found in an object that appears symmetrical at first glance. The perfection that life aspires to is forced to adapt into a more irregular and complex form when it encounters an indifferent environment. Yet the ideal still lies just below the surface. It is a whisper only our mind can hear. My sculpture is inspired by this conflict between an ideal state and an imperfect reality. In it can be found both the chaos of growth and the geometry of perfection.” (Excerpt from Spiczka’s Artist Statement)

Very nice, Sam! All are good, but I especially like the roots in the first image. That opens vast new territory for you.

Powerfully complex forms, Sam. The ball and socket idea you use is intriguing. (Maybe I should say 'very hip'.)
Congratulations on this new show. How many pieces will you include? How many of those have never been exhibited before?

Thanks, All.

Fritchie-that work is actually one of my older ones, 2001. I may be picking that idea up again pretty soon though. That was really my last big work before I moved down to a mid-scale. I love working that large, but it's very expensive and difficult to keep moving around. Eventually, I'd like to make some more in that scale but for commissions. That way, I don't go into debt and I only have to move it once.

JAZ- Really only two of the show's 7 mid-to-large works have been exhibited before. Seed II and Triple Spark, the first and third images up there. You all will have seen some of the others because I've posted them in the gallery down below. Two of the works nobody will have seen because I still haven't finished them yet. Speaking of which... back to work.

Sam- Congratulations on the exhibition wish I could see it. I wanted to say that I love the sculpture in the last photo above. Fantastic, I hope that it is enormous, it looks to me like it could turn like gears around the central core.
Great work. Good luck with the show.

Blake- That detail is of a work 9 feet tall. The central "ball" is around 12 inches in diameter. I love working large, but it's a lot easier to move the smaller ones around.

Thanks, Robert. I'm doing the final packing, loading and preparing as I type. I think it'll be a great show, if the work is any judge. ;)

Hope all is well in the Land Down-Under.

This is what you'll see if you're stuck behind me on I-35 tomorrow. There's more in the back of the truck as well.

The show's up and looks great, y'all. Don't forget to stop down tonight for First Fridays here in KC and say Hi. To top it off, it looks like the weather is going to hold.

Hi Sam,

I hope your opening went well. I'm at the end of a pressing sculpture deadline myself so I couldn't attend, but was thinking about you and wish you well.

In about three weeks I may go to KC, and was wondering how long the show will run?

I'm glad to hear you made it safely pulling that trailer, but then you've traveled these roads before on your Dream Sculpture Tour!

That stretch of I-35 North of KC is indeed a rough patch of road but I made it there and back unscathed. The show will be up until May 28th. Hopefully you can make it.

I had a great time and it was very well received. The opening was supposed to be from 6-9 PM but I finally closed up around 11:30 and still met a couple people coming as I was leaving for the after-show festivities at Grinders.

Here are a couple pictures that turned out okay. My digital camera is just not ideal for indoor snapshots.

Good shots, Sam, and congratulations on what sounds like a fine opening.

Ditto here, Sam. Everything looks great and the space fits the pieces. the one ont he wall looks in the photo as if just moseyed in from outside, like, 'hey, what's going on here? I want to be a part of this'.

I bet you're feeling pretty good right about now. The accolades are well earned.
