well I just wanted to update everyone on the latest from my new teaching gig in South Dakota. When I got here the facility was a wreck, I threw out about 6 tables (we still have 5), and rearranged everything to be a better use of space. I got a donation of a welder from a local factory, and purchased 2 new mig welders and some grinders, a slide compound miter saw, and a metal cut off saw. I pulled out the table saw, joiner, belt sander, scroll saw, and drill press. All of this was being stored on top of the sand pit for casting. None had been used for at least 3 years. Now I am converting an electric kiln into a burnout kiln. Last week word came that I had been approved to convert an old computer lab into a student gallery. Right now there are no galleries on campus where students can work on installations, or hang a class or individual show. Yesterday I got word that we are getting a glass blowing setup, donation from a former dean, woo hoo:). I have always wanted to do some glass but have never had the facilities or anyone knowledgeable about it. Now it seems that I will need to learn another media with pleasure. Does anyone here know anything about glass working? I may have to have the school send me to a workshop to learn about it this summer. Penland does glass right? Any info on this new media would be greatly appreciated. Things are going well, I haven't had any time to make my own work but I think that is going to change soon, I got a donation of steel for my students from a scrap yard and picked up a really cool old fender off of a 1940s chevrolet, I also have some really cool old columns off of our 100 year old house, I think they are beginning to speak to each other.
Have a great day everyone, I can't wait to see what develops today.

Pretty exciting stuff, with fresh toys to boot!
Yes, Penland has glass, & there's a sizable artist community surrounding it. Perhaps if you cajole &quiz them...

Of course there's always Pilchuck...

Yes. it is exciting, starting your sculpture teaching facilities. Having an additional student gallery is useful.

How many students are you expecting? And how big is your sculpture workshop/studio in terms of sq ft (or sq m)?

Do show us some photos.

Hey Matt, You sound very enthusiastic and I'm sure that you're working hard at this and will make a success of it.
I think that's fantastic and I hope that the students appreciate your hard work and dedication.
I wish you the best,
Jeff

Hi Matt.
It sounds to me like that school is really, really lucky to have you there whipping things into shape. It's exciting to have such an open slate to work with and so much control. Congratulations.
