I would consider myself a moody artist. As cliche as it sounds, I do not care to admit it, but it is true. I have found that if I put on particular music it can really get me back into the frenzy of ideas and sculpting. I would like to know who your favorite musician and album is? Young and Old. One of mine, Nick Cave's "No More Shall We Part." A controversial album among Nick Cave fans because he references his new found faith repeatedly. It is full of soul and yearning and peace. Sometimes I forget there is more art out than just my own.

i'm a stone carver so different music for different facets of the job. polishing or detail work, mellow stuff like nick cave, pink floyd or dead can dance. but when it comes to smashing rock, then i put on some system of a down, offspring or ac/dc.

I regularly have soft background music when I work on my sculptures, at my PC, or when I drive.
I don't play recorded music. Instead I listen to radio, selecting the stations that suit my taste. Currently one station is mainly on classical music, and another station is mainly on pop songs and music for people in my age group.
When news come on, I turn it louder, otherwise as I said the volume is soft.
When I eat, I switch on the TV.
When I sleep, I switch on a bit of light.
When I am dead, I don't think I'll switch on anything. ;) (Come to think of it, should I leave a request that my ash be ground and mixed into some resin for a cast that I like? Either a self portrait bust, a ghost, an angel, or a devil. Think out of the box, they say.)

Can't hear music over exhaust fan, mig welder, grinder, wood stove flue-pipe heat exchanger fan, oxy-acet cutting, cut-off saw, and bitching and moaning I do to make metal do what I want...
Then again, I just might be hearing that "different drummer"!
Boy do I love my job. :D

I don't listen to music when I work on art of any sort. It isn't right for me for some reason...I like to listen to news, talk radio or books on tape...that sort of thing. The part of my brain that isn't involved in the creative process likes to still be occupied. Now, I do find certain artists inspire me when I'm not actually working. During those times that I am just mentally conceptualizing or thinking about a possible topic to explore I do find music stimulates the process. Peter Gabriel is one of the best for me in that regard. The universal quality to his lyrics and use of global musical themes gets my mind into a very creative place.

I have noisy tools too like Oddist... but I love music even for a deafboy like me. I crank up the volume to 11 to everything from Toots, Meat Puppets, Minutemen, Bela Fleck, Ozomotli... I'm in my own world smashing metal...
luv it!

Funny, EJB. I hear those too. Maybe that is why I put some music on, drown 'em out. Or sometimes I listen and they tell me what to sculpt. Just kidding... a little. I never thought of Peter Gabriel, never really cared much for his stuff, but I can see where you are coming from. I do have a tape by him, maybe I'll try him while I'm working and see if he triggers much. A lot of times it is only background noise and before I know it the music is over and I have heard a bit of it. But sometimes it seeps through and I really feel connected to something. Hard to explain. Peter Murphy is another that really does it for me. Incredibly ethereal. I would really like to hear more from people on this. Not sure why?

I was working with modeling clay and sand blasting today while listening to Black Sabath (the same cd two or three times), and then Astor Piazzola. I sometimes put the radio on. I have an eclectic taste in music...

I don't have a particular favourite album or artist. I listen to a whole spectrum of music depending on what I am in the mood for and what I need to listen to. I also work in silence or with all levels of noise/distractions, so music isn't necessary to my process. Some favs are:
Sarah McLachlan
Dead Can Dance
Stan Rogers
Nina Simone
Rachmaninoff
U2
Delerium
Clannad
........and the list can go on and on...this is all I can think of first thing this morning :D .

and yes, Tom Jones...different sounds for different moods..
