First let me apologize to anyone who has tried to access Sculpture Community or Sculpture.net since this problem began.
Saturday, the community was acting sluggish and it got worse and worse until it finally went down altogether in the late afternoon.
Everything went down hard and they decided to move us - unplanned - to a completely new main server. I was trying to field hundreds of incoming messages, and just as my frustration was hitting all-time high, all my email went down.
It is now Wednesday but if you have directly emailed me since Saturday and I did not responded then it is because I did not get your email. Please email me again if you think I should have received something from you and responded. I do have 2,287 emailed errors that did come through.
The good news is that we are on a better and faster server with more room for data and images of sculpture.
I have had many sleepless nights trying to get the various problems resolved, and now want to thank all of you for your support while this problem has been going on.

It's good to know you weren't whisked away by one of those midwestern twisters,
and I'm glad you could sort out the mess. Your efforts are appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, but we can "discover" royal blood in his past and allow him to "reclaim" the throne!

He already has the chair and headaches----maybe you could take him the crown and scepter and a nice warm ermine robe for those cold sleepless Knights.?

Anybody else having trouble getting to the forum via Netscape? It still pops up the "forum is down" message for me and refreshing it doesn't seem to work.

Sam - I don't think I have had more problems than with IE, and I use Netscape 7.1. I can’t roll the slidebar while new material is coming in - a “feature” I think Russ said he fixed for IE 6 or so months ago, but that is the least of my worries.
Russ - This episode reminds all of us just what effort and level of resources you dedicate to this site. Many thanks, and congratulations!, as many have said before me.

Thanks everyone, and I do need to get some sleep, because now I'm getting old I guess. When I was young, software and tech stuff was my "easy" job for money instead of sculpture, and I never seemed to need any sleep.
But now I mostly make sculpture, and just fool around with computers for no money - so I like that much better!
Actually, tomorrow I'm a finalist in a public art project, so I'll be offline for a little while. But the Community is looking solid, and I feel good about the new server, as I can tell the load is handled well. We just keep growing, so that's a good problem.
Sam - Netscape must have a good page cache because that file is not even on the system now. You might go to the menu - Netscape - Preferences - Advanced - Cache - and clear the memory and disk cache. That's from looking at the Mac, but Windows is similar.
Fritchie - I'm not sure about the sidebar roll in Netscape while loading a page issue. I have a few small issues with Safari also. And IE loads pages differently with each version so it can be weird also.
As far as royalty, I'm just about as common as they come.
Heck, I'd just be glad to make one sculpture that I'm really happy with when I'm done - but that has eluded me for years. :)

Okay, did that and still no good. Even went straight to the hard drive and cleaned temp internet files and still no good. Maybe I'll just chant something, restart, and see what happens.
And it seems your life has come full circle, Russ. Used to program for money and make sculpture for free. Now the tables have been turned. Nice.

Was the page still open in a browser when you cleared the cache? Sometimes that's causes it to not completely clear, and sometimes you might need to reboot if the computer is feeding the browser from a virtual memory cache.
These kinds of files usually expire in 24 hours, which also should fix it eventually.
The other thing is that the index.html file has now been replaced by index.php, so you can add index.php to the / like this: www.sculpture.net/community/index.php

Some people teach, others wait tables, for me while at art school (KCAI) the easy money was in tech summer jobs. After that it was in consulting, and eventually in the creation of specialized interactive language systems. My company back then was PublicSphere, but that's another story...

Good luck with your presentation:
I'm trying to get into the public art venue and have been sending off the slides and res and letters of interest.
If you don't mind, could I ask you about your approach to the process Russ?
and an example, or basic format, of a letter of interest?
and what you think is appropriate for the finalist interview?
again------good luck tomorrow
as to really happy with one---perhaps you keep getting better because you're not yet satisfied?

Sam - It’s been awhile since I had a cache problem like that, and I don’t even remember the problem, but what Russ suggested, plus the extra you did, cleared the problem for me. I did restart after all the clearing. Hope you get this straight!

While I was in Baltimore I couldn't get on the site and blamed it on my sister-in-law's aol. Now everything's back to normal (except me?). Rus, you deserve a medal, or crown, or prize.
Let us know how the public art project worked out.

I think you should remain steadfast in claiming that AOL is at fault ;) It works for me!!

Here's one good thing about AOL - all those free CDs they keep sending out to lure in new customers. I've seen several examples of artwork that rely on those snazzy discs as media.

Nice work Russ.
I knew there was some crash on the server, but was not able to contact you.
It was a mystery for awhile, interesting, and I'm sure, somewhat of a nightmare for you.
Glad we are up and running...this is a super meeting place.
cheers,
