Anvil Repair Workshop

An Early heads up here if you're near NJ. The NJ BLACKSMITHS Assoc. will have an Anvil repair workshop this fall. This is a hands on workshop where you bring YOUR banged up anvil to the event where it will be heated to the proper welding temp over a huge fire and welded (by a pro) to fill the gouges, worn edges etc. Then the grinding is pretty much up to you to do at the event. There is a fee somewhere around $100 - 125? per anvil. This is the most popular event for the NJ Blacksmiths so if anyone needs their anvils repaired think about this soon. It is held in Farmingdale, NJ, i think in October.

I always thought that the more surface dings an anvil had the more character it showed.

I hope you're joking. My anvil is a Fisher from the late 1800's and i'll take it over a new junk one from china any day. Have you priced anvils lately?

Most of our blacksmiths are using 100 plus year old anvils and some of the boys will even mirror finish the top for kicks. And yes they will use them not admire their ugly reflections.

Saturday November 19th, Anvil Repair Workshop,

at Marshall Bienstock’s shop.

We will be starting the anvil repair workshop at 8AM. All are welcomed to attend and participate.

For $120 and some sweat labor you get your beat-up old anvil repaired with freshly welded, ground and polished edges. This is a workshop. Anvil owners are participants, usually meaning you will be assigned a task such as grinding, etc. Anvils missing chunks of the face badly swayed or otherwise abused can also be repaired, but will require more preparation, labor, and money on your part.

The workshop will take place at Marshall Bienstock's shop in Howell NJ. Prior registration is required so we can have the proper amount of supplies on hand - please provide the approximate size of your anvil. Pictures would help determine the amount of work required. NJBA has run a similar workshop on several occasion with tremendous results. (Open to members only, but anyone may join NJBA on the day of the event.)


Directions: Marshall’s Farm
Marshalls farm is at 663 Casino Drive, HowelI (Monmouth Co.). NJ. which is about 1/4 mile east of Route 9. Casino Dr. is a few miles north of 1-195. and a few miles south of Rte. 33. Either of these routes can be easily reached from the major north-south highways. including the Garden State Parkway. the NJ Turnpike. 1-195. Rt. 18 or Rt. 34.

Whats to repair? Can one "break" an anvil? Lord knows I've tried but the damned things are just so solid and heavy and made out of STEEL. Just kidding Sub, basically I only use mine (3) to mash things, so blunted corners and chips and nicks are not of concern to me. If I ever knock the horn off though, I'll check it out.

I'm sure you can knock your horn off. I've seen a few hornless boys around. Doubt we can fix it though. I'll see if we have any pics of the event. Love the huge bonfire used to preheat the stock of repair anvils.
