Angel in a rock
Today I got started on a new project, and I am very excited about it, there is a lot of "inspiration", it is going to be hard for me to go to work monday, instead of working in this.
Like wise in the next few weeks, on my weekends and free time, this will be what I am working on, but once it is all done, I will post it here,..I really am excited about this, and had been patiently waiting for some time for the idea, etc to come to me. Here is how the stone looked, but I saw a angel in it, ![]() ![]() I took 4 photos of the crude stone, but won't bore you with all of them,to see them if you want, http://www.garryricketsonartworks.or...tprojects.html This also has a little more about it, the same with the "sketch" there are a few more photos. Below are 2 of my "sketch", it is pretty clear in my mind how it will look when finished,..this type of granite, a red granite, is tricky to work with because it can chip or crumble unexpectedly, but so far it is going good, the stone it's self is coming off right where it should ,as I do my removal, the "angel", is in there I just need to be careful bringing him out. ![]() ![]() For now that is all.from Garry

Re: Angel in a rock
You see things in the stone. That is good. Most of my wood carving subjects happen that way. At first, it was un-nerving. Spooky. Now, I enjoy the sudden realization of what there is that I should carve.
Can somebody explain the rudimentary method to post images here? I will never have any other places (websites, are they?) for pix. Every other forum that I belong to is idiot-simple to post images. . . . all but this one. |

Re: Angel in a rock
Often in a natural stone, or cliffs and other natural formations Yea, I see a lot of things, faces, especially. With this stone, for example, I don't know if anyone else would see, the angel, in it's natural state, it is pretty abstract, but it is there, so I just add some detail, to bring it out. Sometimes with a natural, uncut stone, all though it may have been broken from a bigger stone, and Who knows how?, but anyway, often the stone has such distinct characteristics, that it is "aesthetic" or pretty and I would not want to do anything to change it.Others, like this one, seem to "cry out", "take me,take me,..shape me into something,"
Just yesterday, some people brought me a piece of marble they found, how it ever got to where they found it is a mystery to me, it was way out in the sticks, but there is no marble in that area just a few stones, that they found. Any way they wanted me to try to make a butterfly, of all things,..but I really liked the stone just like it is. So I offered to do the butterfly, but from a cut block ,(small) of some white "venitian" (white) marble we have here, left over from some monument, in exchange for the stone they brought. It may very well have something in it, but it will be awhile before I can "see" it. You can use the file attachments also to attach a image, but you need to be a ISC member More Info on: ISC , to attach anything larger then 72kb, (aprox). Your best option is to start a account with a service such as photobucket.com , or dropbox, and the just include a link to the file or image, these are not "websites" in the sense, of a blog or something, they are simple iamge and file storage hosts, Photo bucket is pretty much just for images and videos, drop box is more for files, but also accepts images. from Garry

Re: Angel in a rock
Thanks Gary. Will look into some image storage places. I looked at the ISC, nice to see there's a "geezer's discount". Think I'll pass.
The angel and the butterfly will be interesting to see developed. Most wood is just that to me = wood. I have piles of log pieces indoors and out. Red & yellow cedars, willow, alder, basswood, mahogany, some is cut that I bought. I've walked past pieces for 6+months, looked at them nearly every day until suddenly I know what's in a piece. I have enough WIPs that I don't yearn for another. Other times, I have to find the wood block that an idea fits into. I want to carve a bowl in the form of a sea otter floating on its back. I don't have the wood for it. Don't see it yet. I have no compulsion to hoard wood, just that there's so much available here for free and as big as you can haul away. |

Re: Angel in a rock
This is how it is looking now. Still needs a lot of work.
