There is very little work shown because most often people give opinion and call it critique. If you think that opinion and critique are the same thing then you are wrong.
We have had some great sculptors show work on this sight and they have been blasted with massive negativity. Most often by some one who knows very little about anything artistic.
Just a few months ago Blake was subjected to some one calling his work merely decoration. THIS IS NOT CRITIQUE. Why would a sculptor of his caliber continue to post with this sort of crap going on.
petty bullshit. Way too much of it!
I have sent private messages to some one who was just looking to scrap and was told that I should look for another forum if I dont like it.
Does any one think that sort of nonsence will make people keep coming sign up?
I dont care if you want a little club house with only a few people commenting... patting each other on the back. But this wont last.
Hi Tobias,
I guess you`re right to some extent. Probably, moderating our attitudes help. There`will always be a smart ass putting down the best work no matter what, and hey who knows, at times he may even be right. Now, my believe is that the key thing is not what one says, but rather how something is said. It`s not the same to say that you need to work a little harder on anatomy proportions, than saying your figurative sculpture makes no sense, or you`d better go fishing instead of taking up sculpture recreationally. Now, members of some forums, really make naive, crafts if you wish, or what have you and they expect the how beautiful, nice or colorful their art is answer. So they`re either shocked by some hard professional opinion, or they find themselves posting with almost zero answers because nobody dares to say it`s a crap in a "nice" way. Might be too extremes, but rather have a hard comment than an empty pleasing one. Again, the tone is important. Did you read about the ORDER/CHAOS post? Well, that permeates into every aspect of life and this forum is no exception. I like it though for the most part, but let`s be politely harsh huh

Howdy Joe,

Yes indeed, but a little late to recognice it, it is a joke but as bad as well aimed boomerang huh.
Sorry, I`m being a naughty ant, and having fun, life`s been too serious lately.
Peace, bro.

Nelson: "Little participants" was a joke pointing to a grammatical error.

It was a joke!!!! But for your information: I've traveled out of this country more than several dozen times. Indeed, I am an immigrant and have lived in several countries.
Joe,
Look, truthfullly excuse me for having being so harsh on you, and for having used offensive wording. Let`s say CHAOS took over, and back to ya in order Peace and back to art.

The tone one sets also can have much to do with the types of responses one may get.

As for a serious critique, I often am unsure whether someone wants to have a minor detail or even a major one that could stand for improvement pointed out or not. There are so many different perspectives here. I was amazed at a work that reminded me of a WPA style (not a compliment particularly) that had some rather significant anatomical flaws and other parts that were inconsistent with each other. By the time I got around to it enough high praise had been heaped and accepted by the artist that I did not want to spoil the "party" by pointing out the, to me, rather serious flaws. It would likely be mis-interpreted as "you want to kill the life of the piece by focusing on your idea of anatomical perfection" rather than seen from my perspective that " If you corrected this amaturish mistake it would no longer detract from the integrity of the work, and the life would still be maintained".

When I have someone critique my own work, I am hoping that if I missed something that could improve it, they will point it out to me. If I think they are wrong, fine, no harm done. But if they are right, I get the opportunity to correct something that my eye, from looking at the same thing for so long, may have missed.

Then, there is also the case when someone shows pictures of their recently installed public work of art. In such a case, it is hard to add a helpful but critical critique because it is too late to do anything about it, so at that point it may be like raining on their parade.

Glenn, any posting of anything on this forum is open to ANY critique/response (those two are the SAME thing). I've havent known you to be sheepish or hold back. I've come to expect you to say your piece...as I do(and many others quite DO also). Your rain aint gonna mess-up nobody's parade...dont worry.
And its quite okay also to wish your druthers upon a completed artifact that cannot and will not ever be changed. Because its is one of he FEW valuable things that can occur between ants that we, in supected ownership of higher views, can encourage second-guessings and re-thinkings.
after-all, our species has only kept from being eaten by functioning WITH each other (despite the obviousness that our continued developing will slowly discard that need).
If you ever think you are raining on my parade, please monsoon instead...I might get pissed but I also might...MIGHT... learn something. Stranger things have happened.

I'll just play it safe here and let you know it was a joke.
No need for any angrily-enumerated indictments.

Re: What do you think of this forum?

I have found this forum excellent for technical information. It's really been wonderful, thanks a mint.
The rest of the forum feels like a private club most of the time, probably because I don't spend enough time here to keep up with the banter.
Images should be big and free to post.
Also, being an aesthetically sensitive person, the ugliness of this sight offends.

I think it's amply clear there's very little privacy available here. So everyone is welcome to jump in at any time. Yup, it's just a matter of you having a life... that doesn't necessarily include banter as a source of sanity. Don't let that stop you from joining in as you're able... please.

Is that a rule, a suggestion, a game or what?

1- I`ve seen angry indictments here
2- Hope enumarating ain`t a problem
3- that`s part of the dynamics of chaos, and of life... this forum hope is no exception (referred to life not to chaos, though
it applies to both at times).
4- thought there`s freedom of speech within some limits
5- maybe I exceeded the limits? not the only one...?
6- If you take some time, there`s been tacit and expressed appologies from parts involved
7- This is not an angry, but an ennumerated explanation
8- hope this brings clarity to all and you feel better
9- I feel better
10- Just playing safe myself but no joking
11- joking in this two-dimensional medium has its risks but at times makes things interesting...
12-This like any other experience always leaves something positive, something to cherish!
12-wish you a Merry Xmas. well in advance
13-Friendly emoticons, friendly emoticons, friendly emoticons.....

Re: What do you think of this forum?

New from Mattel "angrily enumerated indictments"? The first person who can yell out how many people in the crowd are either missing their pants or stepped on your foot gets to hold the timer the next time & just watch.

oh yeah, the accompanying smirk

Nelson, you're so articulate that we aren't always aware when there's a language issue. To be clear, obseq is just saying he wants to be clear he was joking so as not to upset anyone. If you were joking too, then you just need to use more emoticons too.

Re: What do you think of this forum?

I think this forum is great for sculptors! i have learned about different techniques and tools other than metal work. I have gotten opinions i both liked and disliked and the people on here for the most part fill the gammut. If i got just appreciative responses i would feel cheated. Most seem sincere. I like the diversity!

As a sculptor i appreciate seeing what other people do.

One thing i would like to see more is the process of proposals to finished sculptures to gain insight on the jury and other processes that bring public art to communities.

thanks yall

Z

Re: What do you think of this forum?

A thought RE the design of this site. I would love to be able to access all the forums from any page. It took me a while to locate the "forum jump" device at the bottom of a thread and I find using it clunky. What would work better would be drop down menus from "Sculpture Community" and "Photo Gallery" etc. where they are already listed above. The codes are simple and you can even download some free.
