"Juxtamorphs" - Andrew Werby Sculpture Show opening Nov 5
A rare opportunity to see work from 20 years of Juxtamorphic production, spanning digital and analog techniques and a variety of materials.
Juxtamorphs Oakland sculptor Andrew Werby, best known locally for his Potter's Wall in Willard Park and his reliefs at the Berkeley Bowl Marketplace, studied art and design at UC Berkeley. He combines traditional carving and casting techniques in plaster, wood and bronze with the newest technologies in three-dimensional digital scanning, modeling and fabrication. As the founder of United Artworks (ComputerSculpture.com), a discount retail distributor, Werby believes digital technology promises exciting new possibilities for creative expression. His Juxtamorph sculptures, 3D digital collages (Juxtamorphs.com), marry analog and digital realms, bringing new life to such natural forms as trilobite shells and sea-fan leaves; mangos and sunflowers; allosaurus claws, duckbill dinosaur, mastodon and cave-bear teeth; American mountain ranges and the craterscapes of Jupiter's moons. Curator DeWitt Cheng writes for The East Bay Express, Art Ltd., Artillery, Sculpture, Visual Art Source and ArtBusiness. Shown, (L to R), opposite side: Rafinaut, Irhinaut, Guitgour, samples prepared for scanning. |

Good luck with your show Andrew, wish that I was there to check it out. Lived across the Bay in San Rafael for 25 years before we moved to VA.
I've used ScanSite in Woodacre for my enlargements along with Kelly at Sattelite Models in Belmont. Nice People. |

Re: "Juxtamorphs" - Andrew Werby Sculpture Show opening Nov 5
Thanks, Julianna and Mack! I thought the show looked pretty good - it's not often I get to see my work well-lit, with space around it, against white walls.
The opening was pretty well-attended considering that most people in the area are afraid to come into downtown Oakland at the best of times, and that night happened to be dedicated to street riots in commemoration of a slap-on-the-wrist sentence for a cop who shot and killed a handcuffed citizen in full view of bystanders' cell-phone cameras. But hey, at least we didn't have an earthquake... Andrew Werby juxtamorph.com |

A late congratulations on this, Andrew!
When I get around to making my rounds in California, it would be great to see your work in person! Glad to hear that the opening was well-attended, (even with all of the dangers of Oakland abound). ![]() ![]() |

[Thanks - what "commercial angle"? Does the fact that I sell some of the tools I use and give my customers the benefit of my experience with them somehow soil my art for you? Do you think the fact that you teach bronze casting for money interferes with other people's experience in looking at your art?] wondering if ..from a fundamental point of view for amusements sake... the digital element takes something of the difficult human element away, afterall dont want sculpture to become video do we?... [I suppose one could make video of sculpture, particularly kinetic work. I wouldn't have a problem with that - why would you? As for the "difficult human element", do you feel that using a keyboard and a word processor dehumanizes your writing? Is a quill pen dipped in ink always better, because it's more difficult to use? Or is writing really about something other than the tools used to perform it?] Andrew Werby juxtamorph.com |
