100 amp wire welder

hi question foe the steel guys. i would like to combine whole bunch of 1 quarter inch round stock steel rods to a wood carving. i can rent a 100 amp wire welder from home depot. but i know nothing about welding. is it paulisable for someone to just read up on it and just go to it. any advice would be aprecheted.

absolutely, you can weld with the mig. youtube probably has a few video "how to's" if you're mechanically inclined it would help. there may be trouble shooting involved with the wire feed system, but its not rocket science. I think the solid wires using 75-25 gas are by far the easiest to learn with, piont and squeeze

As long as you understand three REALLY important things you should be fine to mess around:

1 - don't get between the ground and the electrode
2 - Protect your eyes with the right mask
3 - protect your skin and studio from burning

I have found that fluxcore .035 wire works great on that little welder (a bit messier but it penetrates better, thusly increasing the capacity/thickness of your material). And you wont need the gas tank.
