Because the "local" supplier no longer will carry USG products, I had not been able to get Hydrocal from them since. When I did get it from them I had to buy a 40 bag pallet at a time, and the price kept going up every time I ordered.
So I looked at Densite gypsum cement at Continental Clay and tried a few bags and it worked well so I ordered 1,000# of it which I got back in December.
A coupel of weeks later they called and asked if I had opened the bags yet- I had, turned out a mixup at the supplier resulted in Continental being shipped the FAST set formula, and I discovered 18 of the 20 bags were fast set.
I WONDERED why the heck the stuff was setting so fast I could barely get it poured out of the pail when it started to set!
So Continental replaced the whole 1,000# and shipped it to me at no charge.
I discovered that if I mix at least 25% of the regular set in with the fast set it sets normally,so that worked out fine for me.
The Densite is working out real well, and oddly enough it seems HARDER than Hydrocal, and what's more- you don't have to stand there and mix and mix and mix as the Hydrocal instructions state is required (at least for THEIR product it is) this stuff I just mix it to no lumps/smooth, no 6-8 minute mixing needed, and it sets HARDER than Hydrocal, in fact the spec sheet even show higher numbers 7000-8000 PSI compressive strength instead of 5000:
I like how THIS stuff comes in 50# bags which is a heck of lot easier to move around than those damnable 100# things USG packs Hydrocal in, the cost per 100# of material is comparable for both products.
