What is this?

I found this in a box of $1 items at our regional federal surplus. It looks like a reject aluminum cast of a tool (there is some pitting and the ends were only rough cut). Essentially an tapered (and softened) wedge with an off-set handle. Single piece - all aluminum. No markings and the shank is a plain cylinder.

Thought maybe it was from an industrial kitchen mixer - but doesn't really figure. Any ideas? I feel like I've seen one before....

Re: What is this?

Not a clue. But I would hammer that thing through a folded highway map into a block of limestone. "Geometry, Geography, Geology". Done. Call the museums.

The only other thing to make it out of Roswell all those many years ago.

It is template for cutting pie sections built to military spec's.

Re: What is this?

Oh, and sculptors shouldnt wear jewelry (rings either). I had a friend who lost a finger in a mishap that involved his scrap-metal sculpture and the crane that was lifting it. The ring hooked into the art which was hooked to the crane and and everything got lifted except the screaming artist. No shit.

Relate that tale to your betrothed and she wont mind you taking it off for work. Me, I just have never worn it...it is a kept symbol.

Nice bedtime story e, but how that relates to this thread is as uncertain as the object in question.

Look closer-- CP's ring creeps into the frame.

Jeff,
Any decent slices in SC?
If not, at least you can lay claim to have green chile 24/7!

Re: What is this?

Its a futuristic sextant probably fell out of a star ship and pulled through a black hole to our time. It was captured by our planets gravity and crashed to earth. Its indestructable alloy ensured it didnt get destroyed during entry into our atmosphere or the impact with the ground

Re: What is this?

Regarding e's story about the ring, the lesson might not be to eliminate wearing rings, but to be less attached to one's work.

Had it been his shirt sleeve or pants that got caught in the sculpture instead of his ring, you would not be advocating walking nude as a result.

Re: What is this?

Hey obseq,
Fugedaboutit,
The closest good pizza is 200 miles away at "Brooklyn Pizza" on 4th Ave. in Tucson.
Believe me, that's my first stop on any visit to Tucson.
and they really are from Brooklyn!

Re: What is this?

I have heard many horror stories about rings - some were probably true. I remove "as needed" and play the odds. I really notice when it's missing...it can even be distracting. I love my ring....my preciousssss.

Re: What is this?

If you are in such need that you have to keep something on that finger, have a tattoo put in its place. Then you will never lose that ring.

REAL sculptors prefer objects - not drawings - adorning their bods.

I doubt I could ever commit to any particular design long enough to actually get a tattoo.

I think it is the DOD tool used to do heart surgery ala the Incas. It slices the skin, seperates the ribs, & put square holes in your heart.

Tats are flatties.

A finger is an object...and much more important than jewelery.

Yep-- rings, long hair, beards, clothing... Cheese, I think you need to use your new find as a threatening teaching implement.

Aw, man.... Can't stand those guys. Used to have great pizza, then their quality went to the pits. Been hit or miss. I once ended up with a pie that had rancid cheese on it, returned it to the owner, who in his little v-neck t-shirt, hair gel and tan said, "Well, what do you want me to do about it?" If I only had CPs Federal Surplus wedge...
Other good options near Brooklyn Pizza are Magpies also on 4th, and No Anchovies on University.

Re: What is this?

Yeah obseq, I know that their quality went down for awhile, they started using that fake cheese and that was a big turnoff.
The last time I was there, June, they were back to making good pie.
I wouldn't have gone back but someone told me they returned to form and they had.
I had some nice thin crust pizza somewhere up on Oracle, can't remember the name of the place.
Hey, I like anchovies!

Re: What is this?

Are there any hammer/peen marks on the end of what you call the handle?
Is that pie-shaped piece wider at one radius than at the other?
I harvest my own carving wood from logs abandoned in logging debris piles up in my local mountains.
My (wooden!) wedges are tapered in two directions/axes. From fat at the top to skinny at the bottom, of course. Also tapered from left to right. They never get stuck in a log as there are no two parallel faces.

Curious. No, no markings. Then again it appears to only have been cut from its sprue before being discarded. It IS tapered as you suggest. Hmmmmm.

Maybe we are getting somewhere. Thanks Valley!
