"Rivers & Tides" Showing in DC

RIVERS AND TIDES is a great film about an extraordinary journey into the
world and mind of Scottish sculptor Andy Goldsworthy. Desson Howe of the
Washington Post said, "Watch this film. You may never look at nature
indifferently again." In the United States, Andy Goldsworthy is
represented by the Haines Gallery and Gallerie Lelong. Renowned for his
site-responsive work created in collaboration with the natural
environment, Goldsworthy's pieces are often quite ephemeral. Some of his
sculpture can last days or seconds. The importance lies in the making of
the piece.

Although each piece is about a particular place, each touches on
universal qualities and energies. Goldsworthy has adopted the approach
of working directly with nature and variety of materials including
leaves, twigs, flower petal, pine cones, sand, snow and stone. Much of
his work addresses issues of growth and decay, seasonal cycles and the
idea that an artwork, too has a natural life that eventually must end.
Goldsworthy finds a richness of understanding in revisiting certain
forms such as mounds, holes, arches, spirals, lines each revealing a
different personality facet of its constructive material.

" Fascinating! When a Goldsworthy piece comes together -- it's magical,
profound in its simplicity." -- Edward Guthmann, SF Chronicle
"The movie is breathtaking. It allows your mind to wander into
speculative corners. It lingers long after the images leave the screen."
-- Jon Carroll, SF Chronicle"
"Ravishingly beautiful " -- Stephen Holden, NY Times"
"Truly Great". -- Kenneth Baker, SF Chronicle
"Hypnotically dazzling!" -- David Fear, SF Bay Guardian
" Extraordinary. A beautiful, meditative piece." -- Jeffrey M.
Anderson, SF Examiner
" This is a must-see film. An hour and a half of pure, awe-inspiring
beauty." -- Catherine Graham, Santa Cruz Sentinal

Rivers and Tides: Andy Goldsworthy Working With Time
Dir: Thomas Riedelsheimer
Germany
2001
90 mins

Opening March 28th!

That rare film about an artist that is, in itself, a work of art,
Rivers and Tides: Andy Goldsworthy Working With Time is an extraordinary
journey into the world and mind of Scottish sculptor Andy Goldsworthy. A
land-artist who uses materials from nature to make site-specific works,
Goldsworthy allows the elements to have the last say in his beautiful
creations, as his ingenious patterns of wood, leaves, stone and ice move
and erode over time. German filmmaker Thomas Riedelsheimer followed the
artist for over a year in several outdoor locations, intimately
documenting his improvisational process and capturing the serene
spectacle of his works and their delicate changes. Although
Goldsworthy's private and often ephemeral pieces have been documented
extensively in still photographs, this remarkable movie uses the
artist's own voice to guide us through his process and help us to "…see
something you never saw before, that was always there but you were blind
to it."

Treasuring the Shifting Sands of Art - Stephen Holden of the NY Times

'Rivers' film highlights artist who goes with nature's flow - Edward
Guthmann, SF Chronicle

"To watch and appreciate these works [of art] as [Goldsworthy] does is
to undergo a transformation yourself." - Desson Howe for the Washington
