Using This Forum - How-Tos

Hi, everyone.

I've been thinking for a while of creating some documentation on how to use this forum. It seems that we often get questions from new members about how to post images, etc.

So here it is...feel free to add to this thread with any tips of your own!

Posting replies with quotes

1. Click the "Quote" button for the post you want to quote.
2. If you want to quote only a section of the post, you can delete the unwanted text. Be sure to keep QUOTE and /QUOTE in the sqaure brackets---that's what tells the software to read the text as a quote.
3. Complete the "Title" field and type your message in the big text box.
4. When done, you can click "Preview Post" to see how it looks before you submit the post, or click "Submit Post" directly.

Attaching images to your posts

1. After creating your post (see instructions above) but before submitting it, scroll down to "Additional Options".
2. Click the "Manage Attachments" button.
3. A window will pop up to allow you to upload a file.
4. Click the "Browse" button to find your file. When found, double-click on it.
5. Click the "Upload" button.
6. Wait for the image to be uploaded.
7. You can repeat steps 4-6 to add up to four more images (to a total maximum of 5). You can also click the "Remove" button next to any of the images to remove them.
8. When done, click the "Close Window" button.
9. If you click the "Preview Post" button, you will see a preview of your text post, but the images will not show as part of the preview.
10. To submit your post, click "Submit New Thread".

Adding links to your post

1. Follow the instructions above to create a post.
2. To add the link, click on the icon.
3. A window will pop up.
4. In the first field, type the text you want for the link. If you leave this blank, the website address will be used as the text. Click "OK" when done.
5. In the second field, type the website address. Click "OK" when done.
6. When you are finished with your post, click "Preview Post".
7. Check the link you have added. This is a very important step because it causes others a great deal of frustration when they click on a link that doesn't work. If it doesn't work, go back and fix it until it does
8. When you have confirmed that the link has been added correctly, click "Submit New Thread" or "Submit Post" as the case may be.

Hi Julianna

I can't thank you enough for the above posts. As a relative new member and certified computer illiterate, you've answered my questions and in an easy to understand and concise manner. I've printed them out for future use. Thanks again for your generously taking of your time to do this.

Love your black piece. Has an air of mystery about it.

Are you freezing up there yet? Lou

Re: Using This Forum - How-Tos

I'm glad you found it useful, Tlouis. Let me know if there's anything else you'd like added.

And, yes, it's freezing up here already. We had our first bit of snow on Thursday...

Re: Using This Forum - How-Tos

Julianna,

I'll second what Lou said. For those of us who are sort of computer troglodytes this thread will be really helpful. Thanks for taking the time to do it.

BTW I enjoy your alabaster sculptures. I've done several and like working with alabaster. I enjoy the range of coloration it offers. I'll have to take some digital pics so I can post some of my work.

Thanks again. Ken

Editing Posts

Posts can only be edited within a few minutes after the initial posting. This feature is meant for people to make minor adjustments (e.g. spelling corrections) after they have submitted a post.

If you do not have an edit button on your posts immediately after posting, please contact Russ (the board administrator) through a private message or via email using the "Contact Us" link at the very bottom of any page in the forum. Note that I am not a moderator or administrator and will not be able to grant you access to edit your posts.

To edit a post:
1. Click the "Edit" button in the bottom right-hand corner of your post. It should be the third from the right.
2. Make your changes. If you would like to explain your changes, you may do so in the field marked "Reason for Editing".
3. Click the "Save Changes" or "Preview Changes" button as desired. If you decide to preview your changes before saving, make sure you save them after you are finished reviewing them!

Deleting Posts

Posts can only be deleted within a few minutes after the initial posting. The time restriction is in place for this and most discussion forums to prevent members from removing posts days, months, etc after a submission.

If you do not have an edit button on your posts immediately after posting, please contact Russ (the board administrator) through a private message or via email using the "Contact Us" link at the very bottom of any page in the forum. Note that I am not a moderator or administrator and will not be able to grant you access to edit your posts.

To delete a post:
1. Click the "Edit" button in the bottom right-hand corner of your post. It should be the third from the right.
2. Select the "Delete this post" radio button.
3. Complete the "Reason for Deletion" field, if desired.
4. Double-check to ensure you are deleting the message you want removed. There is no confirmation message.
5. Click the "Delete this Message" button.

Re: Using This Forum - How-Tos

Avatars

Avatars are the small images you can have associated with your username.

Part 1: Sizing your avatar
1. If you do not already have an image-editing program, try GIMP (open-source and free program).
2. To be safe, you may want to make a copy of the image you want to use so you have a backup in case there are problems. To do this in Windows, right-click on the file and select "copy". Then right-click in the white space of that folder (or on your desktop, if that's where the original is) and select "paste". This should create a file called "copy of [original file name]".
3. In your image-editing program, open the image you want to use as your avatar.
4. Resize your image so that the width and height are no more than 64 pixels each. The specific instructions on how to do this vary from one program to another. If you are using GIMP, go to Image>Scale Image, then in the drop-down field next to the width and height fields, change it to "pixels", then change the value of the width and height to 64. You may have the option to "link" the change---for example, if your image was originally 640 pixels wide by 1000 pixels high, "linking" the change means that you can change the hight to 64 pixels and the program will automatically calculate what the proportional width should be.
5. Save your image.

Part 2: Uploading your avatar
1. Log into Sculpture.net
2. Click on "User CP" in the navagation bar at the top of the page.
3. Click "Edit Avatar" in the Control Panel menu on the left.
4. Scroll to the bottom of the page.
5. Click "Browse".
6. Find and double-click your image.
7. Click "Save Changes".

Part 3: Problems?
If your avatar file size is too big, even though it is smaller than 64 pixels by 64 pixels, you will need to do the following:
1. In your image-editing program, open the image you want to use as your avatar.
2. Go to File>Save As
3. Save the file as a "jpg" or "jpeg" file. If it already is in that format, you can still resave it and overwrite the file
4. In your options, decrease the quality (take it down 10% first, then more if it's still too big). In some programs, you may need to click "save" after step 3 before it will give you the option of changing the quality.
5. Try to upload the file again (see Part 2 above).
6. If the file is still to big, repeat steps 1-5 in this section (Part 3) until the file size is okay.

"Appendix": Other Options
There is a handful of avatars available for you to use when you go to "Edit Avatar". However, they aren't specific to sculpting so most people choose to use custom avatars. You may also link to an image online, and it is recommended that you link to one on your own webpage to avoid it disapearing (and to avoid people being upset at you for stealing their bandwidth!). The option to link to an online image is on the "Edit Avatar" page, just above the option to upload an image.

Re: Using This Forum - How-Tos

Photo gallery size limits

It seems that only ISC members can have their photo size limit upgraded past 2k:
http://www.sculpture.net/community/s...ead.php?t=3456

If you are already a member and haven't been upgraded, send a PM to Russ.

As an alternative to those of you who have not yet (or simply don't want to) subscribe to the magazine, you can create a free account with an online photo hosting website and link to the images. Popular photo hosting websites include www.flickr.com and www.photobucket.com When signing up with these websites, be sure to read their terms of service to ensure you're not also signing over more rights than you're willing to surrender. Other sites exist, and a website search for "image hosting" should provide you with the other options. You may also want to check with your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to see whether they include website hosting as part of your plan (the major ISPs in Canada include it).

Re: Using This Forum - How-Tos

Uploading photos to the Photo Gallery

Before you start, see the "Photo gallery size limits" post above. Only ISC members can upload to the Photo Gallery, and you will need to contact Russ to get your member status on this discussion board upgraded (if it doesn't already say "ISC Member" under your name instead of "Level __ user").

1. Log into the site.
2. Click on the Photo Gallery link at the top of the page.
3. Click the "Login" link at the far right of the page. It should be thin, and below a bolded link called "Log Out".
4. Log in using the same username and password for the discussion board.
5. You should now have an "Upload Photos" link next to where the "Login" link used to be. Click on the "Upload Photos" link.
6. You should now be taken to the upload page, which allows you to upload 4 images at a time or one video at a time. The page will also show information regarding your file size limits, etc.
7. Select a category for your files.
8. Click the "Browse" button to find the file from your computer. Double-click on the file to select it.
9. When you're ready, click the "Upload/Submit" button. Please be patient, because your browser is uploading the files to the website so it may take a few minutes.
10. You will be taken to a page where you can add the artist's name or the work's title, change the category, or add a description for the work. Complete the desired fields and click "Process Files".
11. When done, you should be taken to a page with the message "No more images found. Click here to return to main menu."
12. To upload more files, click the "Upload Photos" link again.
