Spray Foam... what's it like?
Hey everyone! Me again, hehe.
I've made a lot of progress in the construction of my lifesize sculpture, but I've run into not quite a predicament, but moreso a thought... I'm going to cast the sculpture in latex, and my sculpture teacher suggested that I fill the latex with foam to keep it light and realistic, but I have a few questions pertaining to foam. The foam I'd like to use is the insulation foam that comes packaged in a can... you simply spray it on. It seems like most come in cans of 12 oz., about how much space would this be able to fill (eg... 2 cubic feet or so?). Also, I'm a bit confused as to what exactly this insulation foam is... is it more rigid, can it be compared to (or is the same as) the foam that you find inside of couch cushions? If I packed it in inside of my latex cast, would it be firm yet slightly flexible? Probably the best solution to these questions would be purchasing a can, but as there aren't any craft stores or home depots within a reasonable distance, I'm left with no choice but to order all of my supplies online.. so before I buy, I'd just like some basic info. Thanks! ![]() |

Re: Spray Foam... what's it like?
Tts a rigid hard shell type foam expand to many times its volume, depending on the make up of the foam and the density of the foam when set. It is a close cell foam meaning the ait entrapped in it is small bulbbles not large.
Once set it can be worked with knives, chisels, sanded, filed carved and painted. It does have a little give but doesn't rebound or have a memory. The couch foam is a soft foam rubber type but now a days not much rubber in some of it. Some of the insulation foam burns or melts with little heat, some is also self extingushing, mean it goes out when the flame is removed. It is good for backing moulds, and re-enfrocement for latex or flex rubber style moulds. If you are looking for a semi flex stuffing, rolled up burlap for bones with wrapped plastic shopping bags covered with poly fiber fill under layered panty hose material for a top skin under the latex. will give you semi rigid, sturcture, with a flexi feeling to the touch depending on how you wrap the burlap with the plastic shopping bags covered in wadded poly fiber fill with the panty hose on the outside of it. The tighter the wrap the stiffer the feel. Sort of like the life sized stuffed dolls that were made after the gabbage patch kids. Here is a link to a company that has the foam guns cans ect at their web site
