Woodwinds - art & technology

Dear friends.

My name is Bjorn Aadnoy and I live on the west coast of Sweden. I have been doing some drawing and painting during my earlier years but really never developed as an artist.

Some years ago I took up sea kayaking and found myself collecting lots of driftwood during my trips. With a background in electronics I started designing a wind monitor that is 90% art & sculpture and 10% technology. Woodwinds is a statement - a contrast to all the buttons and menues that are all over the thing we buy today. Woodwinds is an informative and ever changing sculpture made from wood, glass, brass and electronics.

The wind monitor connects via cable to a roof mounted rotating wind sensor that I have developed myself.

Welcome to my website and please look around. My guestbook is open!

Best regards from a windy Swedish west coast,
BjornWoodwinds

As one who has always appreciated the visual "history" of material I enjoy your work. The past lives of stuff should not only be allowed to resound in its new place within sculpture, but should be encouraged. Things just happen over time to matter that cannot be achieved by the human hand. The skill that you develop is your "eye" for the selecting and placement of this material.

Born - Welcome to our Community. Both the idea and your examples are excellent. Wind vanes used to be more popular here than they are now, but in coastal areas such as yours, they must still be of great value, and of course, the art always is appreciated.

Bjorn....... What a pleasant suprise to see your work. As I veiwed your web page I could not help but think how hard wired the descendants of the northern european coast line are to found materials, boats, water, ice and novel high tech methods and artifacts. It's so funny because I'm a guy of danish descent, stuck in north central ohio, obsessed with the same kinds of interest. When I'm not working on decorative elements for the next shopping mall, I'm all about kayaks, driftwood, weathervanes and high tech devices. What would you do, what would you think if you found yourself in the middle of a flat featureless farm land, a thousand miles from the sea, immersed in american culture?? Artist, culture, geography, migration, time, and inner necessity, it's just novel to think about character and how it defies surroundings. I just can't shake that feeling that I'm a stranger in a strange land. You look right at home. It's nice to see.

Re: Woodwinds - art & technology

Hi again.

My Woodwinds wind monitors are finally on display in a art gallery. I got in touch with the TAVI Gallery in Skagen on the northern peak of Denmark. Now there are 3 Woodwinds on display in this huge 1600m2 gallery.

I am very interested in getting in touch with art galleries around the world that are located in a seaside enviroment where the owner and visitors have a feel for the wind's speed and directione. Please let me know!

Please follow this link to read my article about the exhibition:

Please use this link to get to the TAVI Gallery (sorry Danish text only but very nice pictures):

Best regards,

Re: Woodwinds - art & technology

Congratulations on finding such an excellent place to exhibit your work. When I followed your link, though, I had to guess at the location of your material, so I offer this clue for others. Start in the box at left, with title "Main". That one, and about the following three, describe these timepieces. Later ones describe other aspects of the gallery.

It looks like a beautiful space for art. We also have many large, old brick warehouses and other buildings here in New Orleans that are devoted to newer uses, such as art galleries or museums.

Having recently been on the gulf coast of florida and thought about the violence of the wind and sea........consider the galleries in that area. Your work honors the flotsam aged by time and steady neglect.......what about objects violently displaced. Wind speed means alot to those in harms way. Many rich seaside people would love to have a work of art that helps them gauge the folly of thier decision to live so close to the naked elements. Search for galleries in Florida.

Re: Woodwinds - art & technology

Hi friends.

It's been a while - but I have been busy marketing my Woodwinds, releasing Series 2 and finally introducing: Stonewinds.

I soon found that the history and "romantics" of driftwood only appeals to people who live fairly close to the waterfront. So how about people having a top apartment in Munich, Paris or Chicago - or even a mountain cabin in Canada or Switzerland? Now they can have a wind monitor mounted on a beautiful piece of very black Swedish rock called Diabas.

Hi Bjorn.
Good idea to use the stone. Presumably there is also a wire, though it doesn't show in the photo. Or idoes it have a remote sensor of some kind?
