Poor Garfield

This USA Today story carries a photo of the headless Garfield statue giving the OK sign. It was a clean saw cut, by apparently a relatively big saw.

Ind. town mulls headless Garfield statue

MARION, Ind. (AP) Police say someone stole the fiberglass head of a Garfield statue located near downtown's Riverwalk.

"I've got to believe that whoever did this is probably going to be bragging about this at some point," said Marion Deputy Chief Cliff Sessoms.

The statue is now a headless figure dressed in workout gear and giving the OK sign. ...

Dave Homer, who worked on the Garfield project, said the statue cost about $8,500. "All of the money was donated for the statue itself," Homer said.

The statue was put along the Riverwalk to promote exercise, wellness and riverfront activities, Homer said. ....

Re: Poor Garfield

Well, they've found Garfield's head, intact. They're not sure yet how much it cost to put it back. Any volunteer?

Garfield is supposed to be a cat, but this head does not really look like a cat, not even a cartoon cat.

Re: Poor Garfield

Well, they have found the man who took poor Garfield's head. He said it was unintentional. He hugged the statue too hard and the head fell off.

If what he said is true, the sculptor probably did not do a good job. Now he faces jail term.

Man admits taking Garfield's head

23-year-old pleads guilty, faces jail time

The man accused of hugging the head off of Marion's Garfield statue pleaded guilty Monday in Marion City Court.

Joseph P. Savarino, 23, stood before Judge James Kocher as he spoke about the December incident, in which he claimed to have hugged the statue too hard, resulting in its head falling off.

"It was very unintentional," he said.

Savarino pleaded guilty to criminal mischief, a Class A misdemeanor, and criminal conversion, also a Class A misdemeanor. Each charge carries a standard one-year jail term.....

Re: Poor Garfield

I might pay 8500 for a Bob's Big Boy or a Jack in the Box Head (visual icons of good things comin). But then thats not really Sculpture is it. I'd make them a steel one for 7500.

Re: Poor Garfield

This is what I thought. Something must be wrong with the head of this Garfield statue if this man is to be believed, that the head broke off unintentionally when he hugged it.

But this man is still "given a 90-day suspended sentence and ordered to perform 40 hours of community service and pay $200 in restitution." Apparently the judge did not quite believe his story.

By the way, the cause of justice for this case also seems slow.

Beheaded Garfield statue had physical flaws

MARION, Ind. - It turns out that the city's beheaded statue of Garfield the cat wasn't built quite right. But that isn't getting the man who broke it off the hook.

The fiberglass head of the cartoon cat was missing for three days in December before it was found along the side of a country road near the Mississinewa Reservoir.

City Parks and Recreation Director Belinda Hussong said Thursday that flaws were found in the statue as Garfield creator Jim Davis' company, Paws Inc., was getting it repaired.

"They had talked to the company that had constructed the Garfield and realized that the head wasn't reinforced the way it was supposed to have been," she said. "It was built well, but it was not reinforced like it was supposed to have been at that stress point."

Prosecutors told a judge about the problem Thursday before Joseph Savarino, 23, of Wabash, was given a 90-day suspended sentence and ordered to perform 40 hours of community service and pay $200 in restitution.

Savarino pleaded guilty last month to misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief and criminal conversion, saying he panicked after the statue's head came off when he hugged it.

"I'm very sorry that I did it," he said during Thursday's hearing. "It was not on purpose."
