Our Studio in Progress.
We have 5 children. And our youngest is sculpting with me....that is great having this time together.....and he helps me see things I miss sometimes.
Our family moved from the County area in St. Louis to the country. We bought an old farm house with 3 acres 26 years ago for $39K. We built a new house on this property and what was going to be a garage for our 2 old 911's. But then decided to get back into raising American Saddlebreds. So we started framing up the walls on the garages foundation. Are putting two stalls in there with a loft area up above. The lower level for the horses is done with the 2 mares moved in. And the upper level is on it's way. There's not alot of Sq ft. about 800. Now to give you an idea what desire will do ( in response to the post on how to afford a studio) to achieve something you want. Between my wife and I we make less than $65K a year. I have been eating sack lunches for the past 27 years. We only get a 20 minute lunch at work...so much for being in the UAW, lol. Still we managed to have simple things( I know 2 Porsches may not seem simple......but like I said they're old) . Other than the concrete work, my son and I have done all the framing etc.Learning as we go along. It's being done in stages. The building is 25-4 x 33-4.10 walls below with 9' sidewalls going up on the main studio area...the one not started yet. So where there is a will to get something there is a way to make it happen. Anyone with kids knows the expenses that come with them. So as I can afford the materials we move on with the work. Now we're selling the 2 911's so we can put the money into the fencing, and other breeding operational needs. Anyone else out there involved in the horse world? So let me see if I can stick 2 pics on here of the barn / studio before We start unwrapping presents.. Gary C. |

. Not into horses but I've got a neighbor that sells hers for very big bucks. She's got quite an insane set up. Dig this. She's got between 40 an 60 acres highly divided up into many enclosures of various sizes. Miles of oak fencing shipped from Kentucky to Washington state and then painted black. Of course there are several out buildings and a couple employees. Good luck on the ponies. Oh, and sack lunches? You mean you finally gave up your metal lunch box like me? |

Re: Our Studio in Progress.
GC, A studio can be an enabler or a disabler. Looks like your building the former. As far as the sportscars, not useful for art...the opposite actually - as an artist I am often competing for the dollars that get spent on the sportscars - a formidable opponent.
My lunchbox is the fridge. I go to IT, it don't come with me. It holds enough food to keep the sculpture moving along. My nieghbors have horses too, 17 acres, about six horses as far as I can tell. I smell their crap if the wind turns right, but they smell my welding I'm sure. So we're even. I think I wouldn't mind having a mule to help pull on the heavier bars, or a draft horse, but I'm no horse person (though I did recently received my first equestrian commission - a greater-than-life-size venture. It has been noted that people love horse art...we'll see how Evaldart puts his twist on this one. |

Re: Our Studio in Progress.
Thats true GC!! anyone with kids knows the expenses of that life too. Though I know nothing of the expenses of sports cars. I do know that its all I can do to pay for the welding supplies and other tools. I like your pictures and wish you continuing luck.
