Belly Casting of Pregnant Women

Shop wants pregnant women to celebrate the beauty of their bellies

Jan 19, 2008. Most new mothers have baby memory books to commemorate their new arrival, but a new fad growing in popularity among the pregnant population celebrates the beauty of pregnancy itself: belly casting.

JoAnne Welden, 22, of Copperas Cove, checks out
her new belly cast at Stork Daddy’s in Killeen on
Jan. 12. Welden decided to get a cast done because
her husband is serving on active military duty in San Diego
and will not be able to see the baby, or Welden’s belly,
until he returns.

Belly casting uses plaster to capture changes in a mother’s body. Women can choose between a full body cast, which captures the pregnant stomach and breasts, or a “belly bowl,” which only casts the mother’s pregnant stomach. Mothers can even get new fathers involved and create a cast that includes the father’s hands on the stomach.

At Stork Daddy’s, a consignment and baby supply shop in Killeen, belly casting is becoming more popular.

“Some mothers get the belly bowl and once the baby arrives, flip it over and have the baby’s first pictures in it,” said co-owner Shana Jones. “It’s a beautiful way to remember that special time.” ...
