spinning

lemme no if'n y'all see anything inaccurate in the following
when viewed from above (north) and on into the "void")

dervishes spin anticlockwise
tornadoes and hurricanes spin anticlockwise
the earth spins anticlockwise
the orbits of planets spin anticlockwise
the milky way galaxy spins anticlockwise

accurate?

assuming accuracy, and extrapolating from known data:
as you expand your perspective, the center keeps reorienting to the focal point of the perspective
is it a center devoid of the viewer?
the "limitations of space" are derivative of the perspective?
the perspective becomes the subjective reality and for the existentialists, the ultimate reality
which begs the question
where,when,why,how,does it end
oops-musings

the reason being:
I am trying to design a sculpture that reflects the essence of the above---
uncluttered yet succinct
(perhaps, components within sculpted matrix???...tornado dervish earth ---with solarsystem and arms of galaxy as bronze disks embedded in the landscape and spiral swales---perhaps--)

thoughts?
rod

epimethius:
the sculpted(raised) matrix to be kinetic wind driven

Re: spinning

Rod,

I saw a television special with a whirling deverish on it about 2 months ago. I could swear that he was rotating clockwise.

Re: spinning

I saw these whirling Dervish dancers when I was in Turkey but I didn't take notice which direction they rotate.

We can however look at videos to confirm. Looking at this one, they rotate anticlockwise when seen from the top. Whirling Dervish - Turkey

There is a small modification to what Sculptor wrote, or quote. When viewed from the top, tornados and hurricanes spin anticlockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere.

But I am afraid I don't quite understand what Sculptor is trying to say about his sculpture concept.

Re: spinning

thanks for the video clip merlion
scary phrase there---"dangerously mystical"
i had no idea that they were oppressed repressed suppressed

mystical indeed---after sufficient twirling whirling a psychic transformation occurs wherein the corporeal awareness drifts away ---the chanting is very mantra like and serves as an anchor to the meandering meditative mind

if i understand my readings of myths and legends a pre scythian perhaps early Celtic peoples were led into battle by whirling warriors who used the transformative state to overcome the normal limits of the physical body

i cannot think of a better use for a large open lawn/park than to practice this dance-----first, one dances through the dizziness, then refines the whirling until it assumes a life of it's own and consciousness of body disolves
---but then again, i don't play golf
...
trying to say...the interconnectivity of all things--including the winds
microcosm---macrocosm
all things are connected we spin as all things spin
it's just a matter of scale
and using the wind to power the sculpture
the wind spins and rotates with low pressure areas in the north spinning anticlockwise (opposite in south)prograde to the earth--prograde to the sun--prograde to the galaxy
so showing them together...
here's a rough sketch

Re: spinning

Sculptor, maybe you can get some inspiration from Hero's steam engines, see below. It rotates vertically, sometimes horizontally, driven by steam coming out from slightly bent arms from a central boiler, usually ball shape.

Hero's Engine

... Hero's Engine is today a generic name for any device which propels itself by shooting steam from one or more orifices. ...

The two engines in the picture at the left [below] are from the apparatus collection at Yale University. After filling the sphere with water, a flame is applied to it until the water boils, and the device begins to rotate. ...

Re: spinning

Sculptor-

Not sure here, but I think you could include the famous Taz, the tasmainion devil as a devilish dervish. Just kidding, I'm drawn to the whole spinning thing, if i just doodle, or play with abstract forms, they always end up spiraling, the movement captivates me. Curious to see what you come up with.

Re: spinning

in symbology [ancient] sun symbols etc male to the right female left , the trouble with any symbology from these bases is that it requires a cultural perspective to decode the work ie written for people to understand what it is ur up to.. i have always felt that to be a potential weakness. maybe just do it and see what happens whicheverwayround.
